Embrace Nature on the Jim Tedisco Old Iron Spring Fitness Trail: A Short Hike in Ballston Spa
Nestled in the heart of Ballston Spa, just a short drive south of Saratoga Springs, lies a hidden gem of a hiking trail. Thanks to funding provided by Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, the .5-mile Jim Tedisco Old Iron Spring Fitness Trail opened in 2005, connecting Prospect Street and Front Street in Ballston Spa. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to the area, this wide, flat, and accessible trail is perfect for a quick hike.
How to Get to the Fitness Trail
Getting to the trail is easy and convenient, as it's located right in downtown Ballston Spa. To access the trail, you can enter from either Front or Prospect Street. Please note that each entrance has limited parking spots available.
- Front Street Trailhead: 198 Front St, Ballston Spa, NY 12020
- Prospect Street Trailhead: 45 Prospect St, Ballston Spa, NY 12020
As you start your hike from the Front Street side at Iron Spring Park, you'll come across an old spring and pavilion with an interesting history. This spring was constructed by the Village of Ballston Spa in 1874, and it's said to have tapped the same mineral water that fed a past spring.
The eight-sided pavilion is also one of the oldest in the region, and the spring water is still drinkable today, adding a unique experience to your hiking adventure.
If you start from the Prospect Street trailhead, you'll find wheelchair accessibility from the parking lot. However, please be aware that the Front Street access has stairs, making that end of the trail inaccessible for wheelchair users.
What to Expect
The Old Iron Spring Fitness Trail spans a length of 0.5 miles and is a great spot for a calming nature stroll in the woods. Although it is not a loop trail, you can extend your short hike into an approx. 1.5-mile loop by walking through downtown Ballston Spa on your way back to your car, instead of back down the trail.
As you embark on this short hike, you'll be greeted by a nice wooded area. The trail is covered in crushed stone, offering a comfortable walking surface, and it features benches at both trailheads for your convenience.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of the local environment along the trail, which is an ideal place for birdwatching and wildlife observation. The trail's manageable length ensures that even those with limited time or mobility can still immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural surroundings.
Exploring Ballston Spa
What makes this hiking trail truly special is that it's right in downtown Ballston Spa. After your nature walk, take some time to dive into the community's rich history and vibrant culture. Discover the locally owned shops, indulge in the cuisine, or visit the museums. The trail's convenient location makes it an ideal starting point, or ending point, for a day of adventure and exploration in Ballston Spa.
