Local freelance writer Maureen Werther recently celebrated the launch of her new book, \u201cThem That Has \u2013 the Story of a 1790\u2019s Adirondack House and the People Who Made It Famous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
Werther co-hosted an open house at the Silver Spruce Inn Bed & Breakfast, 2005 Route 9, Schroon Lake, with Phyllis Rogers, owner of the inn.<\/span><\/p>\n
Rogers gave guided tours of the home she has turned into a successful Adirondack bed and breakfast.<\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cI took the expression, \u2018I could write a book,\u2019 quite literally when I learned about the house and its owners,\u201d said Werther, adding that the Silver Spruce Inn has a fascinating and entertaining history. \u201cIt just had to be turned into a book.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
Silver Spruce Inn was originally built in the late 1700s and had a series of owners before a wealthy and eccentric heiress from Waterbury, Conn., named Sallie Miller Smith decided to buy it at the onset of Prohibition and turn it into the nearly 10,000-square-foot Adirondack retreat it is today.<\/span><\/p>\n
In addition to the lore surrounding the house, visitors from across the country have been faithfully returning there to spend time in the Adirondacks for the last 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n
Werther called the event a \u201cbig success,\u201d and she is excited about future book readings and other events that are being planned in and around Saratoga Springs. <\/span><\/p>\n
