Calbone speaks at an October news conference<br \/>\nannouncing the intent of his facility to carry out an affiliation plan with Albany Medical Center.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Saratoga Hospital and Albany Medical<br \/>\nCenter have signed a letter of intent to affiliate,<br \/>\npaving the way for a more comprehensive,<br \/>\ncost-effective and integrated health<br \/>\ncare system.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders of both hospitals announced plans<br \/>\nfor the partnership Oct. 27 and said they<br \/>\nexpect to finalize the affiliation during 2016.<\/p>\n<p>At a news conference, Saratoga Hospital<br \/>\nPresident and CEO Angelo G. Calbone and<br \/>\nAlbany Medical Center President and CEO<br \/>\nJames J. Barba said the planned collaboration<br \/>\nbuilds on partnerships already in place.<\/p>\n<p>They said a prime example is the joint<br \/>\nventure, Malta Med Emergent Care, in Malta.<br \/>\nPhysicians and medical teams from Saratoga<br \/>\nHospital and Albany Medical Center have<br \/>\nbeen working there together since June 2013,<br \/>\nproviding comprehensive 24\/7 urgent care<br \/>\nand higher-level services.<\/p>\n<p>Another example, officials said, is a collaboration<br \/>\nlaunched in 2009 to enhance<br \/>\nstroke care by enabling real-time sharing of<br \/>\ndiagnostic information.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For over a century our goal has been to<br \/>\nprovide the best possible medical care to<br \/>\nresidents of the Saratoga region. Partnering<br \/>\nwith Albany Medical Center allows us<br \/>\nto continue elevating the level of care and<br \/>\noffer increasingly sophisticated diagnostic<br \/>\nand treatment procedures for our growing<br \/>\ncommunity,&#8221; Calbone said.<\/p>\n<p>Albany Med CEO Jim Barba said the affiliation<br \/>\nwould create an integrated, autonomous<br \/>\nhealth system in the region. He indicated large<br \/>\nhealth systems from downstate, Pennsylvania<br \/>\nand Plattsburgh are starting to move into the<br \/>\nAlbany region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a new reality that creating our own<br \/>\nsystem of sufficient size, scope and integration<br \/>\nis the surest route toward achieving our<br \/>\nregional goals of autonomy and quality care<br \/>\nin an environment of lower costs and higher<br \/>\nefficiencies,&#8221; said Barba.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The affiliation we announce today is<br \/>\nanother milestone in our shared history of<br \/>\npartnering to better serve the region,&#8221; he<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;Together, Albany Medical Center and<br \/>\nSaratoga Hospital have demonstrated that<br \/>\npartnership is good medicine. Together we<br \/>\nwill continue to make the highest quality<br \/>\nmedical services in the region more accessible<br \/>\nto more of our residents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Officials said Saratoga Hospital will retain<br \/>\nits name, local leadership and governance,<br \/>\nand oversight of services delivered in the<br \/>\ncommunity. The medical staff will remain<br \/>\npart of the hospital. Staffing decisions will<br \/>\nbe made locally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the primary goals of the partnership<br \/>\nis to protect Saratoga Hospital&#8217;s future&#8211;<br \/>\nto preserve our ability to continue to grow<br \/>\nand provide the care our community needs<br \/>\nand deserves,&#8221; Calbone said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, affiliating with Northeastern<br \/>\nNew York&#8217;s only academic health sciences center&#8211;<br \/>\nwith its medical school and cutting-edge<br \/>\nresearch programs&#8211;enhances the ability of<br \/>\nour medical team and patients to access advanced<br \/>\noptions that are available only through<br \/>\nthat type of institution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Albany Med has a roughly $1 billion annual<br \/>\nbudget and 9,000 employees. Saratoga Hospital<br \/>\nhas 2,300 full- and part-time workers and<br \/>\na $300 million budget.<\/p>\n<p>Calbone said there is a difference between<br \/>\na merger and an affiliation. Under the plan<br \/>\nannounced Tuesday, Saratoga Hospital will<br \/>\nkeep its name, local leadership and management<br \/>\nof services to the community.<\/p>\n<p>Government-led health reforms seek to reduce<br \/>\nthe need for costly hospitalizations. The<br \/>\nemerging payment system, called global budgeting,<br \/>\ncalls for health systems to be paid a set<br \/>\nfee per patient for providing all the patient&#8217;s<br \/>\ncare. It is intended that providers will earn<br \/>\nmore under this system if they provide costeffective<br \/>\ntreatments early, instead of getting<br \/>\nbig fees for providing expensive services later.<\/p>\n<p>Saratoga Hospital facilities include<br \/>\nSaratoga Hospital, Saratoga Hospital Nursing<br \/>\nHome, Wilton Medical Arts, Saratoga Surgery<br \/>\nCenter, Milton Health Center, Saratoga Community<br \/>\nHealth Center and the Mollie Wilmot<br \/>\nRadiation Oncology Center.
