‘Above And Beyond’ Hiking Challenge Seeks To Raise Money To Help Fight Addiction

Posted onJuly 5, 2018July 6, 2018

Helping an addict to recover is often a series of steps taken one at a time. Saratoga Hospital is taking that literally in its new hike fundraising campaign, the Above and Beyond Challenge, presented by the Adirondack Trust Co.

The Challenge encourages businesses and individuals to take advantage of the scenic geography of Upstate New York, while raising funds and awareness for the Addiction Medicine Program at the Saratoga Community Health Center.

This new program features volunteer-led hikes up peaks across the Adirondacks, including the 46 High Peaks, the Lake George Twelve Peaks and the Saranac Six Peaks. The hikes are free and will include a committed adherence to responsible hiking with respect to the natural beauty and protection of the trails, hospital officials said.

The Above and Beyond Challenge is the brainchild of Stephan R. von Schenk, president and CEO of Adirondack Trust Co. and former chair of the Saratoga Foundation Board, who is an avid hiker and outdoorsman.

When Cannone’s Deli re-opened in mid-May in Wilton, it was a homecoming of sorts for John Cannone and his family.

“It’s amazing. I’m seeing faces I haven’t seen in 20 years,” he said.

Cannone started the deli in 1984 and operated it until 1999, when he sold the business and went on to other pursuits, including operating a restaurant at the Saratoga Harness Track. The restaurant also continued, known for a while as Kelly’s Deli. Nineteen years later the new owners were ready to sell.

The Cannones were “looking for a new venture and this came up,” he said. “We know the business better than anyone.”

The Patient Experience Project recently announced new partnerships with strategic investors through an agreement aimed at supporting the agency’s growth and evolution.

PEP, based in Saratoga Springs, will combine its business with the global life sciences platform of Water Street Healthcare Partners, a strategic investor focused exclusively on the healthcare industry, and JLL Partners, a leading middle-market private equity firm.

“I am excited to announce this agreement, which is a natural next chapter for an expanding and innovative business like PEP,” said PEP founder and president Dan Bobear. “It will give us the resources we need to bring additional services to our clients, advance our mission to improve the patient experience, and take the agency to the next level.”

Hospital Designated As ‘Diagnostic Imaging Center Of Excellence’ By A National Group

Posted onJuly 5, 2018July 6, 2018

Following a rigorous approval process with months of preparation, Saratoga Hospital has been designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR), said to be the highest form of recognition an imaging department can receive nationally.

The designation applies to the imaging facilities at both the hospital and Wilton Medical Arts locations, the first to earn this recognition in Upstate New York north of Orange County and east of Buffalo, according to the hospital.

“Meeting the requirements to earn this accreditation in all the imaging modalities that we provide was a daunting process, but we knew we not only could do it, but should do it. Our patients deserve no less,” said radiologist Dr. Philip Fear, president of Millennium Medical Imaging and chairman of Saratoga Hospital’s Medical Imaging Department. “A lot of hard work by our exceptional radiology staff went into this achievement, a dedication they give to their work every day.”

As the first wave of this generation begins reaching 55 in 2001 and heads toward retirement, the workforce could lose substantial numbers of experienced workers from all walks of life.

Most boomers have neither the inclination nor the financial means for early retirement. According to a recent study, 80 percent of those born between 1948 and 1965 expect to work past age 65. Compare that with the roughly 10 percent of the over-65 group who held jobs in 1998. In other words, they will become “boomerangs”.

Business Report: The Caregiver’s Conundrum

When I meet with prospective clients who want to engage in estate or elder law planning, it is not uncommon to hear them forcefully tell me something along the lines of, “I will never go to a nursing home” and/or hear them allude to preferring to take walk in the woods and “take matters into their own hands”

I understand what they are saying. It should be nobody’s life goal to ever call a skilled nursing facility their home. Nonetheless, we don’t always have a choice in life and the truth is that with caring and compassionate skilled care, the quality of our life can greatly be enhanced, even in a nursing home. There is however, an alternative called “aging in place”.

“We can do a site inspection without leaving our desk” and drafting no longer requires pencil and paper or the dreaded drafting pen, said Ed Garrigan, the president of C.T. Male Associates, about the impact of new technology on his field of engineering and surveying.

“Some old-school people like me” still sketch on paper now and then, he aid. But he remains enthusiastic about the “amazing” changes he has seen in his profession and his company, largely in the last five to 10 years.

“It’s a challenge to keep up,” he said.

In order to do so, the company has committees to analyze new equipment and software and to train employees to use it. The company also has a separate IT department.

By John Frega, esq.

Every construction project features unique and interesting challenges. But drafting your construction contract documents should not be one of those challenges.

Here are five important matters to consider when drafting and managing your construction contracts:

1. Determine the appropriate payment model.

Owners have multiple options for structuring payments to their contractors, and choosing the appropriate payment model largely depends on the type of project. The most common models include lump sum, unit price, and time and material, not to exceed (T&M NTE).
