A new center in Clifton Park is helping young people learn teamwork, math, problem solving and logic while preparing them for careers in STEM.
“Code Ninjas is my pride and passion,” said Neelima Kanakamedala, co-owner of the franchise with Latha Jakkani and Uday Sree Kothamachu. The three celebrated the grand opening of the business on Sept. 7.
The concept of learning coding is game-based and uses the black belt system of Tae Kwon Do to learn the basics, advance to new levels, and be rewarded along the way with a belt ceremony, said Kanakamedala. The classroom is the dojo, the instructor is the sensei, and the 7-to-14 year-old students are the ninjas.
Saratoga Custom Engraving Does Work On Awards, Gifts, Food And More
By Jennifer Farnsworth
If Amanda VanPelt had not stopped into a small Canandaigua shop last summer, she may not be exactly where she is today.
VanPelt found herself at a crossroads in her career. It was a visit to an engraving shop, along with some good business sense, that took her in an unexpected direction.
It led to her opening Saratoga Custom Engraving at 81 Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs.
VanPelt said last year she received news that there would be layoffs in the department in an insurance company she was working for. She made the decision to walk away from the company and make a change.
“I likely could have taken another position within the company that I had been working at for 13 years, but I wanted to explore other opportunities. I wanted to be my own boss and do something I was passionate about,” said VanPelt.

Arpey had been a stay-at-home mom since 2009 when her son, Hunter, was born. Then she decided,“it was time to find my passion,” which, it turned out, was opening her own business. “I’ve always wanted to open a business. I just didn’t know when or how.”
Torn between a spa and a clothing and lifestyle boutique, she decided to combine the two. She completed a 10-month course at the Aesthetic Science Institute in Latham, passed the necessary state licensing exams, and found an appropriate location.

By Jill Nagy
A blue ice cream called Cookie Monster is the favorite of customers at the new ice cream parlor and farm store at King Brothers Dairy at 311 King Road in Schuylerville, according to co-owner Jeff King.
The new shop opened in May, although a formal grand opening remains “a moving target,” delayed by bad weather in May and June, activities at the Saratoga County Fair, and the obligations of operating a large dairy farm.
The new, 3,000-square-foot building replaces a much smaller market King Brothers operated at the farm. It offers 34 ice cream flavors, ranging from plain vanilla, chocolate and strawberry to such exotica as coconut cashew crunch, bacon buzz and coffee break (coffee ice cream, fudge swirl, and brownie pieces).
