Small Business Association Syracuse District Director Bernard J. Paprocki released in October the fiscal year 2019 lending report, with 501 7(a) and 504 loan approvals valued at $172.9 million across the 34-county Syracuse district.
Paprocki said Berkshire Bank, The Adirondack Trust Co. and Saratoga National Bank & Trust Co. had the highest number of 7(a) approvals in their respective categories based on asset size.
“Small businesses in Upstate New York are accessing the affordable capital they need to start and expand with SBA-backed loans,” said Paprocki.
‘Amuse’ Is New Eatery In Downtown Saratoga
By Jill Nagy
Saratoga Springs chef Dominic Colose promises an intimate and, hopefully, amusing dining experience when he opens Amuse at 420 Broadway in October.
The new restaurant will share space with the Broadway Deli, in The Washington building, behind Kilwins. It will be open four nights a week after the deli closes for the day.
Amuse and the Broadway Deli will share work space and most equipment, but will store their food in separate coolers.
Colose will also bring in his collection of Tagines, earthenware pots from Morocco used to prepare a spicy stew.
“I worked with Dan (Chessare, owner of the Broadway Deli) before,” most recently at the Wine Bar in Saratoga Springs, Colose noted.

By Rachel Phillips
After throwing the idea around for several years, two local union officers decided to try their hand at running their own plumbing business.
C&L Mechanical Corp. is a veteran-owned business that specializes in the piping industry from residential plumbing and HVAC systems, to industrial and commercial piping system installations. Nelson Charron and Dan Levo, who have a combined 40 years of experience between them, launched their business in September.
Based in Moreau, the business services Northeastern New York, from Albany to the Canadian border. Services include plumbing system installations and repairs, backflow prevention, residential and industrial steam and hydronic heating system installation and repairs, fabrication as well as weld inspections. The company is also signatory with Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 773 in Glens Falls to provide manpower when needed.
Charron said the personal approach he and Levo take for each project makes their business stand out among their customers.
Hospital Is Renovating Space In Wilton Mall To Make Room At Church Street Facility
Saratoga Hospital is leasing more than 56,000 square feet at Wilton Mall to free much-needed space for patient care on the main hospital campus.
The lease, with mall owner and operator Macerich, reflects Saratoga Hospital’s long-term strategic plan to dedicate its Church Street campus to services that must be provided in a hospital setting—24/7 access to intensive and emergency care, constant monitoring, and a highly skilled medical team.
Officials said information systems and other support functions will be the first to move from the hospital campus to the mall space previously occupied by Sears. As departments relocate, hospital space will be reconfigured to meet the desperate need for more inpatient rooms and services that require the capabilities only a hospital can provide.
“Like many hospitals that were built before cities grew around them, we are almost out of room on our hospital campus,” said Angelo Calbone, Saratoga Hospital president and CEO. “To best serve our growing community, we must find ways to reserve space at the hospital for care that simply can’t be provided anywhere else.
“Virtually every Saratoga Hospital facility-related decision reflects that priority,” he said. “This innovative and strategic leasing arrangement is yet another example.”

‘CRAFT On 9’ Moves And Expands Popular Venue, Now Located In Downtown Glens Falls
by Andrea Palmer
CRAFT on 9, a brew pub and restaurant has moved from South Glens Falls to 7 South St. in downtown Glens Falls and has expanded its business..
The building was purchased about a year or so ago by Chris Patten, and completely renovated. There are about 18 new apartments upstairs. The building is also home to Hometown Cigars & Lounge at 278 Glen St.
Rob Murphy, owner of CRAFT on 9, and Bill Dingman, general manager, met when they worked together for many years at Bistro Tallulah in Glens Falls.
“When we were designing the place, we wanted to separate sections for dining and for the bar. So we designed the whole front area with the purpose of being a bar and lounge,” Murphy said. “We put the big windows in to keep the place open. Then we invested in a lot for the dining room in the back, apart from the bar area. We think it will be super beneficial to people who just want a drink. We’ll have a smaller, condensed menu with less entrees and more bar fare,” said Murphy.

Ground-breaking Ceremony Marks The Coming Of U-Haul Facility In Clifton Park
The Saratoga Economic Development Corp. (SEDC) and MJ Properties of Clifton Park Inc. held a ground-breaking celebration on Sept. 26 marking the beginning of a 155,000-square-foot facility that will become the site of a U-Haul Co. facility.
It is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2020.
It marks the first project contained within an $18 million investment—a combined acquisition, design, infrastructure and building investment in Synergy Tech Park.
Officials said the private investment will strategically activate the commercial business park infrastructure, opening up a total of 1.2 million square feet of permitted, shovel-ready sites at its prominent Clifton Park location—one mile fronting the Northway, between exits 9 and 10, and Route 9.
Working with SEDC, the Clifton Park IDA previously froze property taxes to help enable MJ Properties’ investment into opening Synergy Tech Park.
Saratoga Prosperity Partnership To Help Create A Development Plan For Malta
The Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership will work with the Town of Malta to create a customized, town-wide economic development plan designed to broaden the town’s economic base and ensure its long-term prosperity.
The collaboration is part of the Saratoga Partnership’s Next Wave Communities initiative, which assists towns within Saratoga County in developing economic development plans tailored to their particular strengths, needs and aspirations.
Officials said the effort will build on initial work done by the Malta Economic Development Committee, which prepared a plan for the long-term economic future of the town outside the Luther Forest Technology Campus.
That concept will be incorporated with opportunities driven by activities on the campus – highlighted by the presence of GlobalFoundries, which employs more than 3,000 high-tech workers – to develop a comprehensive economic blueprint for Malta.
