Business Briefs: June 2016

The Saratoga Builders Association Inc. announced the recipient of its 2016 Student Scholarship Award is Brian McKeighan of Gansevoort.

McKeighan is a senior at South Glens Falls High School and a member of the National Honors Society. He will be attending SUNY Delhi to study construction management this coming fall.

The Saratoga Builders Association makes this $1000 student scholarship award available annually to high school seniors who are planning to pursue a construction industry education.

The TCT Federal Credit Union announced the recipients of its 2016 academic scholarships.

Four $750 scholarships were awarded to Lillian Snyder (Cambridge High School), Sydney Potter (Shenendehowa High School), Lynn Edwards (Queensbury High School) and Mara Bureau (Queensbury High School).

Each year, TCT awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are TCT members, have displayed outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements and demonstrated an awareness of the “people helping people” credit union philosophy. Applicants are judged by representatives of the New York Credit Union Association located in Albany.

Students interested in applying should look for 2017 scholarship applications to become available this fall at any of the TCT Federal Credit Union’s four branch locations located in: Ballston Spa, Cambridge, Clifton Park and Queensbury. For more information, visit a TCT branch or www.tctfcu.org.

Members of Sackatoga Stable LLC presented in May a $7,500 donation to Old Friends at Cabin Creek, a Saratoga County thoroughbred retirement home located in Greenfield Center.

The donation stems from the group’s belief that a passion for horse racing should be accompanied by a promise make sure horses have a safe and dignified home where they can live a full life off the track.

Formed in 2006 by Knowlton and co-founder Ed Mitzen, Sackatoga Stable LLC was created for investors who wish to enter a horse racing partnership. The group is dedicated to providing investors with an enjoyable racing experience and the potential for achieving financial success through purchasing quality horses, with the added commitment to contributing to nonprofit organizations that benefit all aspects of the sport.

NBT Bank was named 2015 Financial Institution of the Year at the 12th annual LPL Financial Institution Services Program Leadership Conference held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

NBT Bank was nominated by LPL growth consultants and selected from more than 750 financial institutions based on quantitative and qualitative factors, including year-over-year growth, thought leadership and innovation

The annual conference is one of the industry’s largest gatherings of financial institution investment program leaders, with more than 250 bank and credit union program managers and executives in attendance this year. The conference provided attendees with the opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities in today’s financial services environment and the importance of wealth management for the long-term growth of community banks and credit unions and to network with peers.

The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association will be sponsoring a Networking Breakfast on Tuesday, May 17, from 7:30-8:30 a.m., hosted by Community Emergency Corps, 78 Thompson St. in Ballston Spa.

Community Emergency Corps, which celebrates 50 years of service in 2016, is a nonprofit, emergency medical service organization that serves the Village of Ballston Spa, the Town of Milton, part of the Town of Ballston. The breakfast falls will include a demonstration of life-saving equipment, as well as a discussion about the world of EMS.

Cost for the breakfast is $5 with advance reservation or $10 that morning, both payable at the door. Business and community members are welcome.

C.T. Male Associates was honored with a gold award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York in category of Surveying and Mapping Technology for the Empire State Plaza grand staircase rehabilitation high definition 3D laser scan project at the State Museum and Archives in Albany.

Winners were honored at the 49th annual Engineering Excellence awards gala at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City in March. In conjunction with the gala, ACEC New York’s scholarship program awarded more than $50,000 to engineering students in the state.

The LA Group in Saratoga Springs received a historic preservation merit award from the New York Upstate Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for its work done on the Grey Towers National Historic Site facilities master plan. The site is in Milford, Pa.

The LA Group was hired by the U.S. Forest Service to develop a comprehensive plan outlining steps for the preservation, development, and evolution of the renowned national historic site.

The final plan was reviewed by a jury of landscape architecture professionals and selected to receive the merit award because the project represented “significant quality, innovation, and professional impact.” The firm was also recognized for its “efforts to provide access and modernization to the site while maintaining the integrity of historic context.”

Built in 1886, Grey Towers is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, the first director of the U.S. Forest Service.

HomeBridge Financial Services Inc., a residential mortgage lender, will host a grand opening wine and cheese event from 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, at at 125 High Rock Ave., Suite 202, its Capital Region headquarters in downtown Saratoga Springs.

The event will feature giveaways, a raffle for an iPad mini, as well as a $500 coupon toward closing costs.

Staffed by branch sales manager and mortgage loan originator Heidi Ives, mortgage loan originator Christian LaBier and mortgage loan processor Melissa Hurd, the new location allows for further expansion of the HomeBridge organization into Upstate New York and New Jersey.

The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association hosts its 2016 annual meeting and community mixer on Monday, March 21, at Next Door Kitchen & Bar, 51 Front St. in Ballston Spa.

The annual meeting and mixer is an opportunity for members and non-members to review BSBPA accomplishments, honor outgoing board members and welcome new ones. The evening begins with a social hour and buffet at 6 p.m., followed by the official meeting at 7 p.m.

Cost is $30 per person. Paid reservations are available online at www.ballston.org. When filling in order information, indicate names of attendees in comment section for name tags. Limited admission will also be available at the door. This event is open to the public.

Saratoga Bridges received an $11,700 grant from the GlobalFoundries-Town of Malta Foundation for a kitchen refurbishment project at its home on Meadow Rue Place in Malta.

Saratoga Bridges staff will be addressing items such as purchasing appliances and fixtures that are energy efficient and replacing the flooring, countertops, cabinets and medical closet.

When the agency purchased the house in 2000, it was 13 years old. Initially, it spent $17,000 in modifications. Since then, they painted, installed a fire alarm, purchased a new furnace and replaced some carpeting. However, they were not able to update the kitchen at that time. Those issues will now be addressed.

The Saratoga Hospital and Nursing Home Volunteer Guild is offering five $1,500 scholarships to graduating seniors in the greater Saratoga County region that have been accepted into college to study in the health care field.

Graduates may be pursuing a broad range of medical careers such as pre-med, nursing, bio-medical research, pharmacology, medical imaging, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, physician’s assistant, mental health and health care management.

Eligible students must be entering college in September, have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and a documented record of community service. Application deadline is April 4. Winners will be honored at the guild’s annual recognition dinner on May 19.

Home Made Theater in Saratoga Springs was awarded the title of Best Community Theatre by NY Theatre Guide.

HMT was nominated along with four other theaters in New York state. An online vote resulted in this win for HMT, which is part of NY Theatre Guide’s Best of 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards.

The awards are designed to honor local performing arts, entertainment and education organizations for their creativity, talents, and contributions across all of New York state. Voting was held online and ballots were cast by thousands of New Yorkers across the state.

The Saratoga Women in Business (SWIB) group meet 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, in the Arches Room at the Gideon Putnam Hotel, in the Saratoga Spa State Park at 24 Gideon Putnam Road, Saratoga Springs.

The SWIB group targets female business leaders in the greater Saratoga Springs area and offers free bi-monthly fellowship opportunities. Wine and light snacks, sponsored by area businesses, are provided at each gathering. Voluntary cash contributions will be collected at the door in order to help fund future SWIB events.

The March nonprofit spotlight will be on Saratoga Bridges, which provides professional services to people with developmental disabilities and their families.
