Saratoga Bath Co. has recently launched an introductory line in time for the holiday season. The organic bath and body products company is owned by Rebecca Kane.

Kane has been the owner of AMP Galleries, located in the Saratoga Marketplace on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, since 2015, along with partner Sharon Castro. Her new collection, RK Livingwaters, brings the medicinal qualities of the mineral springs in Saratoga Springs to a visual platform.

Kane said she spent time at each natural spring located within the region taking photographs. The images are dye-infused into aluminum. Each image at the gallery reflects the healing power of the natural flowing waters.

After photographing the mineral springs, she began to conceive of ideas.

“I decided I wanted to use the mineral springs as inspiration behind a campaign whose message of inner grace and beauty could be shared by everyone. What better way to spread the word than with organic bath and beauty products inspired by these world renowned mineral springs?” said Kane.

Saratoga Bath Co. is launching with five products: body lotion, body wash, body soak, body scrub and a bubble bath. The products are part of the Classic Collection, which features a delicate coconut orange lemon scent. The Classic Collection is inspired by the high Victorian elegance of Saratoga Springs, said Kane.

A collaborative effort among  MJ Properties, Fairchild Square LLC and the Clifton Park IDA and Saratoga Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) has helped win over $394,000 of local incentives to boost $3.23 million in new private investment in Clifton Park.

The investments are expected to attract 27 new jobs and retain seven area jobs over the next three years, according to SEDC.

“As part of attracting and retaining talent and businesses to grow jobs, Saratoga needs an inventory of competitive spaces,” the agency said in a statement.

SEDC said $2.3 million of private investment will deliver a 25,000-square-foot new spec building to be programmed for future warehouse or office space projected to stimulate 15 new jobs within three years. Another $950,000 of private investment will deliver a 7,500-square-foot building that will be the new home of MJ Properties, retaining seven local jobs.

The other half of the building will be available for lease and is projected by SEDC to attract 12 new jobs within three years. Construction of the buildings will start in January at 8 and 12 Fairchild Square, Clifton Park.

Four new building lots in Saratoga Springs, being referred to as the Reserve at Ohonte Way are available for purchase and development. The 14-acre space offers country living within the city limits, off of Kaydeross Avenue West and Route 9.

It is less than two miles from Northway Exit 13 and downtown Saratoga Springs.

After three years of planning and approvals, Kaydeross Partners LLC has developed the Reserve at Ohonte Way.  Wayne Perras, Realtor for Keller Williams Realty, is representing the property.

“It took a long time to carve this out because it was a virgin lot,” said Perras.

The Reserve at Ohonte Way was named to honor the indigenous Mohawk tribe from the region. Like the word “Kaydeross”, “Ohonte” is also a Mohawk word, meaning “grass” or “green.”

The development offers country living, said Perras, so that residents can enjoy a sense of peace and solitude, away from the busy downtown center. Evergreen trees and a running stream provide the backdrop of the property.

Adirondack Trust Hits $3.45M In SBA Lending

Posted onDecember 6, 2017December 15, 2017

The Adirondack Trust Co. had a successful year for its lending through the U.S. Small Business Administration, bank officials said.

For the year ending Sept. 30, the bank approved 42 SBA 7(a) loans, amounting to more than $3.45 million. This makes Adirondack Trust Co. the top lender in Saratoga and Warren Counties as a locally headquartered community bank, officials said.

“We are very pleased with the results of our SBA lending activities this year.  For the fifteenth consecutive year, we were the most active locally headquartered and locally owned bank in both Saratoga and Warren counties, both in terms of number of loans made and in terms of the total dollars loaned, said bank President Stephan von Schenk said.

“Since our founding in 1901, this has been the center of our work. Every day, we work closely with locally owned and operated businesses, and we are proud to be able to help them grow by making SBA and other financing programs available. We are only as strong as our community, and the core of our mission is to continually serve that community and go above and beyond.”

In addition to helping business owners achieve their financial goals, The bank’s SBA lending program assisted in creating 101 new jobs across 20 businesses in the region, putting more dollars into more local pockets, according to the company.

Saratoga Brewing and DeCrescente Distributing Co., with help from the local community, raised $16,000 through an annual coaster and pinup program, in support of the Saratoga WarHorse Foundation.

“Now in our third year, this program has evolved tremendously,” said Max Oswald, general manager of Saratoga Brewing. “New organizations have come on board and put their own unique spin on the program, from hosting events like Kentucky Derby parties and Keep the Pint Night to creating a 5K team. While some of the players have changed, the mission has remained the same: to increase awareness of Saratoga WarHorse and the amazing job they do for our vets.”

Saratoga WarHorse offers veterans a three-day experience that is effective for those struggling to adjust to life after military service. The program is provided at no cost to the veterans.

According to the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Department of Defense, roughly 22 military service members take their own lives every day. Reasons include the challenge of adjustment and transition to life after military service, as well as the negative stigma around seeking help in the military community.

Saratoga WarHorse provides an interactive experience between off-the-track thoroughbreds and veterans. By utilizing the silent language of the horse, a mutual trust and  bond is established that goes beyond verbal communication, according to the organization.

It has been a little over 40 years since a group of concerned adults and teens sat around a kitchen table in Clifton Park, putting together the pieces that would eventually form a human services program that has since transformed the lives of teens all over Saratoga County.

CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services supports youth, adults and families, giving them to tools be become self-sufficient and successful in life.

Sue Catroppa, executive director, said over the past 40 years they have grown into a $2.8 million organization with 65 full- and part-time employees, and between 300 and 400 volunteers. As a result of their continuing growth, CAPTAIN is in the final stages of a merger with Community Human Services (CHA), a 41-year-old agency located in Glenville.

Catroppa said CHS provides services that complement CAPTAIN’s.

“It is truly a good merger, and a great match,” said Catroppa.

Catroppa said CHS provides services to senior citizens and provides social services to the Burnt Hills school district, allowing CAPTAIN to expand its programs geographically. The merger was approved by the state and is on track to be completed by the end of the year.

Taylor’s Heroes, a fitness and nutrition program for young people ages 8 to 18, has openings for new members when its next session begins Jan. 11. The program, which includes exercise classes, sports participation, and nutrition advice over 14 weeks, is free.

The current group will have a graduate celebration—a healthy dinner at the Hampton Inn in Saratoga—on Dec. 14.

The program is named in honor of David Taylor Miller, a U.S. Army Pfc. and Saratoga Hills High School graduate who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, at the age of 19. Miller, formerly an obese child, whipped himself into shape with a program of diet and exercise before joining the Army.

The organization was founded by his mother and aunt and is run entirely by volunteers.

The two main aspects of the program are group exercise and instruction on nutrition, including tips on shopping for and preparing healthy foods. A nutrition expert is available to work with individual parents, helping them plan menus and prepare alternative snacks. The children also do some cooking.

“We are trying to work more with parents,” said organization president Leslie Miller. “It is hard for kids to choose healthy snacks when they don’t find them in the refrigerator.”

Business Report: Building An Effective Board Of Directors

Posted onDecember 6, 2017December 7, 2017
Matt Young, of Bond Schoeneck & King, deals with nonprofit governance and compliance.

By Matt Young

“Nonprofits embody the best spirit and values of our nation. They help millions of individuals and families daily. They protect, feed, heal, shelter, educate, and nurture our bodies and spirits. Nonprofits also give shape to our boldest dreams, highest ideals, and noblest causes. They turn our beliefs into action – as promoters of democracy, champions of the common good, incubators of innovation, laboratories of leadership, protectors of taxpayers, responders in times of trouble, stimulators of the economy, and weavers of community fabric.” — National Council of Nonprofits

The importance of not-for-profit organizations cannot be understated—they are the life-blood of our community. And the most successful not-for-profit organizations have one thing in common—effective boards of directors. Effective boards ensure that the organization stays focused on its mission, manages its funds effectively, and complies with the ever-changing legal and regulatory environment. Selecting the right people to serve on your organization’s board is critical to its success.

As you move forward in your recruitment efforts, these five priorities can help you build an effective board:

1. Commitment to the Mission.

Boards establish and oversee the mission of their organizations. Boards develop and adopt policies and procedures to help management and staff achieve that mission. Effective board members care deeply about, and “buy in” to, the organization’s mission. If they do not, they will not bring much value.

Holiday Gifts Of A More Personal Nature Can Be Found In Many Small Ballston Spa Shops

Downtown Ballston Spa is decorated to welcome shoppers for the holidays. There are many shops in the downtown area where people can find out-of-the-ordinary gift options.

It’s that time of year again. Amidst all the joy and happiness that comes with the holiday season, it’s also a hectic time for many people. Finding the perfect gift for everyone can be stressful.

Big chain stores offer a seemingly endless selection of pre-packaged gift sets and generic knickknacks. For those seeking a more personal touch, however, these gifts may fall short.

Fortunately, Saratoga County is home to an array of local businesses selling items that make for a personalized gift-giving experience. Ballston Spa is home to many of those kinds of shops.

Those shopping for antique lovers have a few options in the area.

In Ballston Spa, 91 Milton Ave., is the Two If By Sea Gallery, owned and operated by Gregory Tkal. The gallery is a showroom of antique lighting fixtures, as well as vintage art, prints, ornaments and stained-glass panels. The light fixtures, which include chandeliers, table lamps and more, have each been fully restored, rewired and cleaned, and are “ready to be used for another 100 years,” said Tkal. “The pieces I carry are very unique. Each light fixture is an older piece, and you just can’t get the quality of workmanship in a modern fixture.”

Tkal’s wares are also displayed on an online gallery, at twoifbyseagallery.com, and on his Etsy shop by the same name.
