The New York State Federation of Lake Associations, Inc. (NYSFOLA) presented its 2016 Lake Steward Award to Dave Pierce, Ballston Lake Improvement Association’s board member and Lake Management Committee chairman at the recent NYSFOLA annual meeting.
The award is presented annually to a lake association volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for his/her lake association.
Among many activities, Pierce was instrumental in writing a grant that helped fund a study to measure the water quality in the inlets feeding Ballston Lake. He then led the study which took two years and required hundreds of samplings of the streams during high rain events.
He also led the effort to set up the equipment and process needed to get lake data including water temperature, lake level and oxygen levels on a daily basis. He then worked on the collection of that data. His collaboration with Dr. Greg Boyer of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry provided a data analysis of waters along the shoreline of the lake.
Pierce works regularly with the Saratoga County Soil and Water Conservation District to address issues that deal directly with the Ballston Lake Watershed. He has worked with the town to establish a detailed Ballston Lake water shed area.
