SUNY Adirondack is offering a one-year
Entrepreneurship and Business Management
certificate program intended for
those who desire to enter business immediately
upon graduation or who are
currently employed and who seek to obtain
formal education in the field of business to
enhance their prospects for employment
and promotion.
Officials said the program also supports
those who seek to own and operate their
own businesses or go into an existing family
business.
The coursework required for the certificate
program prepares students for employment
in a broad range of business fields and
provides individuals with the knowledge
and skills to assist in various management
functions, according to the college.
“This program is a reflection of the trend
that has developed across the country:
more and more people want to start their
own businesses,” said A. Nicholas Buttino,
chairman of SUNY Adirondack’s Business
Division. “We want to help satisfy our students’
dreams of making it on their own, and this program will give them the tools
to do that.”
Statistics from the New York State Department
of Labor indicate that median
weekly earnings in 2011 were 10.43 percent
higher for individuals with some college as
compared with individuals with only a high
school diploma or GED. Students earning
degrees in engineering, science, medicine,
information technology and technology, as
well as students completing AAS degrees
in media arts and culinary arts, may seek
to start businesses and obtain a formal
education in business.
Officials said the program will be desirable
to students currently engaged in local
family businesses who are unable to attend
college for two full years of academic studies
and who wish to take on more challenging
roles and responsibilities within the
family business.
