A new student-run credit union named the Vault has opened in the Shenendehowa School District to not only teach young people the value of money, but show them how to make their own transactions and gain access to their own funds during the school day.
Cap Com’s Shen branch joins the Credit Union’s School Banking Program, which is teaching kids to save by making deposits in the classroom at more than 70 local elementary schools. The Shen branch and School Banking Program are part of several free credit union programs aimed at teaching financial literacy and helping young families make smart choices.
A ceremonial ribbon cutting was held in the fall, attended by Superintendent Oliver Robinson, Shenendehowa High School Principal Donald Flynt, business teachers Laura Tarlo and Christine Kelly, members of the Board of Education, several Cap Com officials including educational initiatives manager Nicolle Monast, Chamber of Southern Saratoga County Business/Education Partnership Committee Chairwoman Fern Hurley of Sylvan Learning Centers, and Chamber of Southern Saratoga County President/CEO Pete Bardunias.
“Student financial literacy is important,” said Cap Com’s Monast. “Students who volunteer here will learn vital skills for the business world including privacy and how to make transactions. We are excited to get started.”
