Certified Naturally Grown provides small, local growers with an alternative label and certification system that consumers can quickly come to trust and understand. In our immediate Saratoga Springs area, there are 47 CNG farms within 100 miles of the Saratoga area that provide produce (45), livestock, &/or honey.
CNG is a non-profit organization offering certification programs tailored for small-scale, direct-market farmers and beekeepers using natural methods. One of the main goals for this grassroots group is to strengthen the local food system by encouraging natural practices and providing customers confidence in local farmers delivering healthy food from healthy soil. CNG was founded when the National Organic Program (NOP) took effect in 2002, partly out of dissatisfaction with the direction the NOP was taking. But more so, with the interest to create a program uniquely valuable to small farmers and the communities they feed.
The certification model of the group encourages collaboration, transparency, and community involvement. All programs are based on the highest ideals of organic farming, and the requirements are reasonable. CNG’s Certification Standards use as their starting point the National Organic Program standards, but Certified Naturally Grown is an independent program not affiliated with the NOP. CNG is nationally recognized and endorsed, and it thrives because of enormous volunteer efforts .
