Get to know a little bit about facial peels, their usage and what you can expect from the treatment.

There is a lot of confusion out there about peels and rightly so. Hopefully, I can clarify. Feel free to ask questions if something is not clear.

Generally, the most popular “peels” are glycolic and salicylic. The glycolic peel is an alpha hydroxy acid while the salicylic is a beta hydroxy. Basically, the glycolic is most often used on dry skin, the salicylic on oily skin. They can also be used in combination: as an AB peel.

Most importantly, a salicylic or glycolic peel rarely create visible peeling when used alone or in concentrations most often used in the spa. These acids are used to better soften and exfoliate the skin, allow for deeper penetration of product and clear the passageway of the pore.

One deeper peel that will actually produce peeling is a Jessner. This peel has been used for nearly a hundred years, is very safe, and enables beautiful results. It’s terrific for fine lines and wrinkling, sun damage and acne scarring. The Jessner is called a “7 Day Peel” since it will take about 7 – 10 days for the peel’s cycle.

It’s interesting to note that people have very different responses to peels or products that cause visible peeling. Some are very excited, while others are a little wary. However, the process is not scary or painful and is very manageable with the right preparation.

It’s important for your skin care provider to establish realistic goals; in other words, what can/can not and may/may not be addressed by your treatment, and what you can expect the process to be. For example, with a Jessner, you will most likely experience the peeling aspect on days 3, 4, and/or 5, so I work with clients to make sure the timing fits well into their schedule.

Another key aspect of the treatment which will help ensure the best results is pre and post care, including product to use at home and the ability to reach your skin care provider if you have questions.

All in all, exfoliation and the deeper, actual “peeling” of a Jessner can help us achieve healthy, beautiful skin with a glowing, youthful appearance.

Get to know a little bit about facial peels, their usage and what you can expect from the treatment….

[2
466,663,974,1064
post-5976","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ask-the-practitioner","tag-glycolic","tag-jessner-peel","tag-peeling","tag-salicylic
