Bikini Waxing Services Explained
Today, one of the most popular bikini waxing services is called a “Brazilian.” The name comes from the place – Brazil — where there are beautiful beaches and skimpy bikinis.
There are several different types of bikini waxing services and I’ll explain them:
“American”: This is the old style traditional bikini with borders near or at the crease between the leg and groin. The waxing area is primarily located on the front side of the body.
“French”: The borders on this bikini waxing are extended, which narrows the hair down the center. Hair may be trimmed if necessary. The width of the center hair may be wider or narrower depending on the choice of the customer.
“Brazilian”: Normally, when we talk about this type of service, it means no hair from front to back; however, there are variations on this theme including a strip or triangle (or other shapes) of hair remaining, or other alterations depending upon the client’s choice or modesty.
So, what’s it like to have a Brazilian?
In my practice, I believe in pre and post care to make the waxing a more comfortable, enjoyable and longer lasting experience.
First, the area is prepped and product applied that will help the easy removal of the hair. Then, using a combination of hard and soft waxes, the hair is removed. Here’s where the expertise of the practitioner really comes into play and makes the difference between a good experience and one that can cause bleeding, bruising and a lot of discomfort.
It’s normal to have a dot of blood here or there, but no more than a dot. It’s normal for the skin to become pink – which should clear within twenty minutes; it’s normal for some people to develop bumps – which should also clear relatively quickly. I do use post waxing products to further enhance the experience.
After waxing, you should refrain from sun exposure for about 24 hours, due to the exfoliation of the skin which may increase your likelihood of sun burn. When done properly, waxing should last three to four weeks as the hair follicle must create a whole new hair that must make it’s way to the surface. This is the big difference between waxing and shaving, which merely cuts the hair AT the surface.
For those who have a tendency to have ingrown hairs, waxing is usually better than shaving. One added benefit is that waxing does retard hair growth since over time. If you have questions or concerns, I’m always willing to offer a consult. You can’t base all waxing on having had a bad waxing experience, or by having had waxing in another area. Personally, I feel that an upper lip wax is more uncomfortable than a bikini wax.
And, here’s something I tell all my new Brazilian waxing clients: If you find this service too uncomfortable as we are working, it’s not a contest. Worst case, you’ll end up with neat and tidy French! And yet, seriously, for most women this is not the case. Most women who want the Brazilian, get what they want! 🙂
