Naturopathic Fun (Scary) Facts:
Radiated Turkey Anyone??
So, we know about Frankenfoods. We’ve been educated on empowering ourselves with antioxidants from the radiation of our environment. But what about the two combined in our food supply? It’s bad enough that we are radiated by the environment, but in our food? It’s hear, radiated food, and the safety is a concern.
According to an article by Dr. Mercola:
· Irradiation leads to the formation of furan, which has been linked to liver toxicity, including carcinogenicity
· Irradiated foods must be labeled with the statement “treated with radiation” or “treated by irradiation” and the international symbol for irradiation, the radura
· Irradiated foods contain compounds called 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACBs), which may promote tumor growth and colon cancer; they are found exclusively in irradiated foods
· Irradiation is essentially a very effective medium for masking filthy conditions in slaughterhouses and food processing plants; You can avoid irradiation by choosing locally grown, organic foods as much as possible
In fact, the lack of testing of this form of food manipulation was criticized in an article back in 1969.
The preservation of foods by treatment with ionizing radiation can significantly increase the world’s food resources by reducing spoilage and waste. However, irradiation can bring about chemical transformations in food and food components resulting in the formation of potential mutagens, particularly hydrogen peroxide and various organic peroxides. In order to evaluate the safety of irradiated foods for general consumption by the public, and, indeed, the safety of all foods subjected to environmental factors such as food additives, pesticides, drugs, air and water pollutants, etc., it is necessary to supplement the usual feeding tests with procedures designed to detect all classes of genetic damage. This article includes a comprehensive critical review of (1) the experimental evidence relating to the presence of mutagenic and cytotoxic agents in irradiated media, as detected by their effects on mammalian and non-mammalian cells; (2) the chemical changes produced in irradiated media, especially those which produce known mutagenic substances; and (3) new and convenient in vivo methods for the detection and evaluation ofgenetic damage in mammals.
SCARY!! But,,,Good news! The body can restore itself with REAL food. The following abstract explains how cats who experienced demyelination from irradiated foods obtained full recovery when they were back on a normal diet:
Remyelination of the CNS in multiple sclerosis is thought to be important to restore conduction and protect axons against degeneration. Yet the role that remyelination plays in clinical recovery of function remains unproven. Here, we show that cats fed an irradiated diet during gestation developed a severe neurologic disease resulting from extensive myelin vacuolation and subsequent demyelination. Despite the severe myelin degeneration, axons remained essentially intact. There was a prompt endogenous response by cells of the oligodendrocyte lineage to the demyelination, with remyelination occurring simultaneously. Cats that were returned to a normal diet recovered slowly so that by 3-4 months they were neurologically normal. Histological examination of the CNS at this point showed extensive remyelination that was especially notable in the optic nerve where almost the entire nerve was remyelinated. Biochemical analysis of the diet and tissues from affected cats showed no dietary deficiencies or toxic accumulations. Thus, although the etiology of this remarkable disease remains unknown, it shows unequivocally that where axons are preserved remyelination is the default pathway in the CNS in nonimmune-mediated demyelinating disease. Most importantly, it confirms the clinical relevance of remyelination and its ability to restore function.
My advice for Thanksgiving- enjoy your Turkey with a side dish of gluten free stuffing, but skip the radiation!

Gene’s and Coffee Interact
It’s epigenetics! It’s the combination of your genes with environment that modulate disease risk. An article in Medscape explains the genetic link of adenosine and glutamate genes with coffee and Parkinson’s Disease (PD):
“Just drinking a lot of coffee doesn’t reduce your risk of PD. It depends on the GRIN2A genotype you are carrying,” reaffirmed Dr. Payami. What makes this gene-environment interaction study novel — the first of its kind to show a robust interaction between a gene and an environmental factors through a hypothesis-free genome-wide study — is the implication it may have for the treatment of PD.
Currently, 2 different classes of medications have been tested for possible use in PD: adenosine antagonists, which are caffeine-like, and glutamate antagonists, which are GRIN2A related. Both drug classes were found to be safe but not effective enough to achieve regulatory approval.
