Well, I am up to my retinal orbs with things to write for this column…reflections on the Saratoga meet that was…things about horse retirement and rescue…a slew of thoughts that I must process first, before I commit them to paper–er, to screen.<\/i><\/div>\n
\"Saratoga
\nBut in the meantime: if you think that, SOB, racing is over in New York State simply because Saratoga Race Course is closed for the season…you are wrong. <\/i><\/div>\n
NYRA continues to bring world-class racing in the great Northeast–which, I’m sure, can be viewed by simulcast and therefore, bet upon–virtually anywhere on the planet.<\/i><\/div>\n
I won’t give it all away, but rather allow the NYRA press release speak. (Black highlighting<\/b> and formatting are mine–you know me by now, it’s my way of really, really <\/b>emphasizing something.) It all begins this coming Saturday, September 7th. Racing resumes at Belmont Park September 7<\/b><\/div>\n
ELMONT, N.Y. – A stakes schedule worth $9.5 million, a new Pick 5 wager with a low takeout<\/b>, and a bevy of promotions<\/b> will highlight Belmont Park’s fall meet,<\/b> which begins Saturday, September 7<\/b> and runs for 37 days through October 27.<\/b><\/div>\n
The stakes schedule comprises 31 stakes,<\/b> including 21 graded events<\/b>.<\/div>\n
\"BELMONTOn September 28 alone, Belmont will host six stakes worth $3.4 million: <\/b><\/div>\n
* the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational;<\/b><\/div>\n
* the Grade 1, $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational;
\n* the Grade 1, $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational;<\/b><\/div>\n
* the Grade 1, $400,000 Vosburgh Invitational;<\/b><\/div>\n
* the Grade 1, $400,000 Beldame Invitational and <\/b><\/div>\n
* the Grade 2, $400,000 Kelso Handicap.<\/b><\/div>\n
All six “Super Saturday” races are Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” events. <\/b><\/div>\n
(Last year, four horses who competed on “Super Saturday” went on to win Breeders’ Cup races: Fort Larned, Classic; Little Mike, Turf; Royal Delta, Ladies’ Classic; Zagora, Filly & Mare Turf).<\/div>\n
With the start of the Belmont fall meet, The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will offer a Pick 5 wager every race day<\/b>. The 50-cent minimum, 15-percent takeout wager will span races 1-5.<\/b><\/div>\n
September 7: Opening day festivities<\/b> will include the Grade 2, $250,000 Bowling Green Handicap <\/b>and magnet giveaway<\/b>, while supplies last. (The magnet will feature the Belmont fall meet stakes schedule.) On Sunday, September 8th, fans will receive free grandstand admission into Belmont Park.<\/div>\n
On October 5<\/b>, Belmont will host the<\/div>\n
* Grade 1, $500,000 Foxwoods Champagne for 2-year-olds<\/b> and<\/div>\n
* Grade 1, $500,000 Frizette for 2-year-old fillies.<\/b><\/div>\n
Both races are Breeders’ Cup Challenge races.<\/b><\/div>\n
In addition, October 5<\/b> has been designated Fabulous Fillies’ Day <\/b>and will feature an umbrella giveaway<\/b>, highlight breast cancer research and awareness organizations<\/b>, showcase local art and fashion<\/b>, and include a survivors’ walk.<\/b><\/div>\n
The best New York-breds<\/b> will converge on October 19 <\/b>at Belmont for Empire New York Showcase Day<\/b> presented by The New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund<\/b>. Belmont will present seven stakes, topped by the $250,000 Empire Classic for 3-year-olds and up.<\/b><\/div>\n
On Saturdays,<\/b> Belmont will offer a $300,000 Guaranteed Late Pick 4.<\/b> By guaranteeing the pool, NYRA will supplement the difference if the total wagering pool for the Saturday Late Pick 4 is less than $300,000.<\/div>\n
Sundays<\/b> are Discover Belmont Days.<\/b> Admission is free on Sundays<\/b> with special $5 value packages that include a hot dog, chips, and a soda.<\/b><\/div>\n
On weekends during September,<\/b> fans can get a behind-the-scenes look at the world of Thoroughbred racing<\/b> with the popular “Breakfast at Belmont Park” program from 7 to 9:30 a.m. <\/b><\/div>\n
Admission and activities, including guided tram tours of Belmont’s remarkable stable area<\/b>, trackside commentary of live morning workouts<\/b>, starting gate demonstrations<\/b> and paddock show<\/b>, are free,<\/i><\/b> and breakfast is available for purchase.<\/div>\n
A variety of bands <\/b>will perform in the Belmont Backyard throughout the meet.<\/div>\n
Scheduled to appear are Randy Jackson of Zebra (9\/7); Fivestone (9\/14); Drive, with a guest appearance from A Flock of Seagulls’ lead singer Mike Score (9\/21); The Electrix (9\/28); Shannon Breeze (10\/5); Interplay (10\/12); a Columbus Day Country Music Fest featuring Wil Van Awken, Mark Newman, Sean Cuoco, Tony Montalbo, and other guests (10\/14); Rockjunky (10\/19); and Wonderous Stories (10\/20).<\/i><\/div>\n

With live racing generally conducted Wednesdays through Sundays, first post is at 1:05 p.m. in September <\/b>and 12:50 in October.<\/b><\/div>\n

while children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. <\/b><\/div>\n
