What’s a wither?
To most people, “wither” is a verb, and means, to become dry and shrivel.
To horse people, a horse’s withers are the highest point of a horse’s shoulders.
Dock? Hock? Fetlock?
Do you know that the equine eye is the largest of any land mammal?
If these words and factoid are news to you–you need to Get Thee to Gary’s Barn…
This coming Tuesday, August 4th at 11AM, Thoroughbred Trainer, Gary Contessa–who needs no introduction to fans of horse racing–will lead a fun, fascinating tour of the body of a Thoroughbred. (Actually, of more than one, I’m sure.)
Gary will teach Conformation of the Thoroughbred at his barn at the Saratoga Race Course, a beautiful, soulful environment in which to learn very mechanical things about our breed. Attendees will be serenaded by the low nickering–and outright whinnying–of the horses in Gary’s barn, as neighbor goats bleat and birds sing to orchestrate the serenity of the Oklahoma backstretch.
This Clinic is the first of three that Gary will present this month, the other two being held at the Hall of Fame on Union Avenue. (Please see Blood-Horse article, below.)
If you’ve ever wondered how a horse’s heart affects her/his ability to run (e.g., Secretariat)–or if having a big butt really does matter–or why a horse’s ankles are critical–you need to attend this Clinic.
Conformation of the Thoroughbred is free and open to the public. Gary has a passion for both horses and education–and he believes, as do I–that education is the way to get people really involved, emotionally, in the sport of horse racing. No one is going to fall in love with horses or racing by playing video games, or attending fashion shows.
BUT if you learn about the sport--about even the physiology of The Horse–you will fully realize how “…fearfully and wonderfully made” are these creatures, and be in even-more awe than you are today.
And if you’re awe-struck, you’ll become a fan.
Gary Contessa wants you to become a fan. He cordially invites you to his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track this coming Tuesday, August 4th at 11AM. (Don’t be late!) Bring a lawn chair if you like–you’ll be outdoors, and the Clinic may very well go over an hour. And think of it as being Horse School: I highly recommend bringing a notepad and paper. On Belmont Stakes Day I sat in Gary’s barn as Bill and Georgia Rush video’d him for Gary’s YouTube channel, Gary Contessa Television. Now, I’ve been a racing fan for 55 yeras–and I took 11 pages of notes! So no one knows so much about The Horse that they have nothing to learn–bring your notepads, folks.
OK, over and out. For more information–or if you have questions about any of Gary’s three Clinics–please contact me: Altieri_Contessa_Racing@yahoo.com. I’ve put directions for parking at the Oklahoma, below. READ IT. You won’t be able to get in–since Tuesdays are dark days, no racing–if you don’t do as I say. Thanks!
OH, YEAH. Blood-Horse spilled the beans in their article: attendees will be given 11″ x 17″ posters of a photo conformation diagram, of American Pharoah. But supplies are limited–so get there early. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. (i.e., Nobody’s runnin’ to Kinko’s to make more.)Tuesday. August 4. 11AM. Oklahoma Training Track. Barn #54. Be there, or miss an amazing time.
😉
