Are you a woman or girl?
Do you love horses, and horse racing?
Good! Then Wednesday, August 14th, 2013 may be one of the most important days of your life, for several reasons:
August 14th, you see, is Fabulous Fillies’ Day at Saratoga Race Course–a day when women in horse racing will be celebrated, nurtured, educated and entertained…
Your Fabulous Fillies’ Day will begin when you get free grandstand admission if you wear PINK. [I’ve been thinking about this–and I LOVE the idea that–from space (say, from the International Space Station, and on Google Earth)–Saratoga Race Course will be a sea of pink. You know me: I think about weird stuff sometimes.] 🙂
Once you’re on the grounds of the race course, you’ll experience an entire day dedicated to women, women’s issues and women in the sport of horse racing. All women, all the time. (One of the reasons why I love NYRA is that they acknowledge the power and potential of women in our sport–and want to encourage our gender to get involved–as fans, professionals and compassionate citizens. Women are the majority of the fan base, and NYRA wants to encourage us to find our passion in the sport, whatever roles our hearts embrace.)
We womenfolk are known for having hearts of compassion–and our genetic, spiritual ability–to relate to the causes and concerns of others–is precisely why NYRA proudly sponsors the Sizzling Hot Pink Saratoga Hat Luncheon to Benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation Sponsored by ESCADA.
I know, that’s a long title, but a simple message. The message is that, women’s health is important–and it’s essential that we find the cure for breast cancer, and soon. Dr. Larry Norton, M.D. (Scientific Director of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Medical Director of the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) will be the guest speaker for the Luncheon. Dr. Norton will speak on the topic, “Breast Cancer: How we are winning the race.”
This is an event you do not want to miss: Dr. Norton will speak, then field questions from attendees, which in turn will foster and encourage dialogue and continued support of the cause. No one–women OR men–are exempt from the possibility of breast cancer. (Yes, males can get the disease.) No one should have to suffer the physical and emotional trauma that accompanies this dreaded disease–but with continued research on the part of dedicated scientists and doctors–the cure CAN be found.
Your attendance at the Sizzling Hot Pink Saratoga Hat Luncheon will help assure that researchers can continue their vital work. Someone in your own family or circle of friends may have or have-had breast cancer: do it for her. (Or, him.)
Attend the luncheon–get all gashed up in pink and your best chapeau.
Dine on fabulous food in the At-the-Rail Pavilion.
Meet special Honoree, Mrs. Marylou Whitney. (Such a gracious and generous woman, Saratoga’s very own Empress. I love Mrs. Whitney–everyone loves her.)
You’ll also meet Emcee, Benita Zahn, Health Reporter from WNYT-TV, and Joanne K. Adams, NYRA’s Director of Community Relations. Joanne is the soul of this Luncheon, the woman whose passion and compassion (there’s that word again) bring this event to life every year.
Details on acquiring tickets to this woman-centric Luncheon are below. August 14th is only a few days, so I encourage you to get on the stick and contact Joanne K. Adams to assure your place for the festivities. You’ll help fund absolutely necessary research–you’ll have a great time–you’ll meet some fabulous babes, like yourself–AND you can shop the ESCADA store (20% of sales will benefit the Foundation). Oh, yes, and you’ll feel really, really good about yourself because you did well by doing good.
After the Luncheon, stroll the grounds of Saratoga Race Course and check out all the other fun and informative stuff that NYRA’s planned for you: fashion show–henna tattoos and an on-track art class.
And, oh, yes: look for Racing Careers for Women table near the Silks’ Room. (Near the Union Avenue entrance to the race course.) Women in racing who work in fascinating jobs will be on-hand to talk about their careers with you and your girls. Women are the majority of the fan base, but we also fill many jobs within the industry–and NYRA wants you to know about all the ways in which you can be vocationally fulfilled by finding your bliss in the sport.
Fabulous Fillies’ Day is for YOU. It’s for all of us. It’s about horses, fun, joy, camaraderie, education and, yes, compassion. Your presence on August 14th is requested–whether you come for the day, or just for the Sizzling Hot Pink Saratoga Hat Luncheon Presented by ESCADA.
I hope that you will come out by the thousands: support the cause, find your vocation, have a blast with the women and girls in your posse. Let’s embrace our power and potential in this sport: women’s presence in racing is essential–and on Fabulous Fillies’ Day, we have the opportunity to come together as one big, pink, caring, racing family. See you there, f!llies and mares.
