An Open Letter to the New York State Gaming Commission:
Dear Gaming Commission:
I am writing you today not just as a resident of New York State, or as a somewhat-interested party.
I am writing you because I am thoroughly entrenched in the world of horses and horse racing as a media representative, second–and horse-lover, first…
I do not write, speak or teach about Standardbred racing, but rather about Thoroughbred and Arabian racing. I
I am involved in racing media of virtually every sort: radio, publishing, Internet, video. I have been a racing fan since 1960, when I was four years old. I’ve been involved in racing media for 10 years ago, since Penny Chenery first encouraged and mentored me. I teach writing, publishing and horse racing industry courses at the college level.
So I write you today with knowledge of the industry and of Joseph DeCarlo’s situation–but also with tremendous compassion for the horse whom he victimized.
I thank you for suspending DeCarlo’s license to race, and hope with all my soul that never, ever will he be allowed to race horses of any breed–in New York State, the United States, North America or the world.
Never should he be allowed even to OWN a horse–I do hope that his victim and any other horses whom he owns–have been given to REAL horse lovers, permanently.
Never again should he be allowed to own a horse, or any other animal. (If he’d torture a 1,000-pound animal–what could he do to a kitten?)
Please, Gaming Commission–please stand up for the horse, and for all animals–and never allow this disgusting-excuse-for-a-human-being to own another horse, or any other animal.
I implore you, also, to work with local and regional police and the Saratoga County District Attorney to assure that this creature (DeCarlo) goes to prison for his actions.
Until horse abuse is taken seriously by everyone–including the law–horses will be tortured and killed by humans, including their owners.
Not until every voice that can, speaks out, and demands serious jail time, will “humans” like DeCarlo truly pay for their crimes.
Abusing any animal is a crime: for an owner to abuse an animal is actually a sin in the eyes of God, I am certain.
Please, suspend DeCarlo forever, and please work with We, the People, to assure that he goes to prison.

I don’t care if you’re a resident of New York State, the United States or Mars. If you live in Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, France, Brazil, Poland–wherever you are on Planet Earth—if you love horses, if you love animals and you’re reading this–please join us in this campaign.
The irony here is that, to some people, the topic of this article is frivolous: the world may be on the brink of yet-more violence, human-against-human. How can I, the writer, care about a single abused horse when the world is in such dire straits?
But the reality is that–peace begins in a single human heart. If a human cannot be kind and loving to an animal–that human has no capacity for kindness toward another human–never mind, for world peace.
We who love horses–the GOOD people who are involved with horse racing–know that horses can lead us to international peace. One horse, one human at a time–we can all learn to get along. We see it in our sport, every day, in every corner of the planet.
So, yes, the world may be heading toward more violence today as I write this–but we know that the capacity to love–the ability to seek peace, to desire it and work toward it–all begins with a single animal. One human, loving one animal, can teach the world how to do Peace.
Please email the New York State Gaming Commission and support that horse! Please email and let them know that they did the RIGHT thing–give them props, they suspended him indefinitely.

Ask them NEVER to allow him to race again.
And go beyond: ask the Commission to work with We, the People, to assure that DeCarlo never owns ANY kind of animal. (Really, can you imagine how he’d treat a kitten, or a puppy?) Ask them to work with law and order to assure that he does jail time.
As long as animal abusers get away with no jail time–they’ll continue to abuse, torture and kill the animals whom God has entrusted to them. If they won’t do the right thing by their animals–it’s OUR job, those of us who love horses and other animals–to assure that they (the abusers) get prison time, and never are allowed to own ANY kind of animal, anywhere on our Earth.
