Kids get an incredible amount of candy and junk at Halloween. My feeling is that it’s part of the “everything in moderation” creed. But nothing is in moderation as the children have party after party loading them with candy then top if off with a huge pillowcase full of candy. What is a mom supposed to do?
Here are three tips to surviving Halloween with healthy kids…
1. Become the “SWITCH WITCH” – a Good witch that the kids visit to exchange the food dye laden candy for organic candies. In Saratoga, both the Healthy Living and the Four Seasons store have great choices for organic candies. I let my kids pick them out and we have a “basket” for switching when the kids get Pixie Stix or Twizzlers. I play the good witch and we make a joke of it. They love it.
2. Teach them to be philanthropic – you can donate extra candy to soldiers and other causes. I’m not totally convinced you are doing a good deed by passing this on, but if someone else wants it … why not.
3. Pay them for their extra candy, so they can buy something special. Bring the candy to work and be a hero or freeze it so that when the kids have birthday parties you can have a basket full. Again, it’s all about moderation for me, not elimination. If you want to eliminate the bad stuff, you can simply throw it away.
Good luck moms, keep those kids healthy and enjoy the fun of Halloween!
