Using “food as medicine” and lifestyle choices to impact health outcomes can be helpful. Yet, when taken to the extreme these tools can cause harm. When health and fitness are viewed as a moral issue, damage to relationships and unhealthy thoughts and cultural norms can ensue.<\/p>\n

For several weeks, I\u2019ve been sharing evidence<\/a> that our diet, behaviors, environmental exposures, thoughts, perceptions, relationships, and cultural beliefs all have a profound impact on our physiology by modulating our genes. These latter concepts that what we believe and think can effect wellness may be harder for some to grasp than the physical factors.<\/p>\n

In my latest pos<\/a>t, I explore how nourishing thoughts, relationships, and empowering beliefs are the environmental factors that are the missing links in healing today. I discuss that sacrificing loving relationships and a contented life in the name of a specific dietary,fitness, or health practice can be causing more harm than good. I also highlight how healthism and weight stigma could be fueling eating disorders and the dangers of viewing body size as “risk marker.”<\/p>\n
