Essential oils are a holistic modality that are compatible with most mind-body–spirit practices. Recently, I came across a self-care process for healing unhealthy relationship patterns through incorporating essential oils’ multifactorial properties.

This exercise immediately caught my attention. As a naturopathic and functional medicine doctor, I have seen how my clients’ relationships, including to themselves, can literally be the main factor that makes a protocol work or keeps them stuck. This is why when I read about the method, I knew it had to be a topic for my YouTube channel.

In my latest clinical tip, I discuss this exercise. It focuses on the use of yarrow essential oil to help support powerful and flexible boundaries within relationships. The process is called “Cutting the Ties that Bind” and it was shared by Cathy Skipper and Florian Birkmayer, MD. It is adapted from the 1970’s book by Phyllis Chrystal. Cathy graciously granted me permission to distribute it to my audience.

This technique is a powerful form of psychoaromatherapy. It creates new neural pathways (neuroplasticity) and forms a more nourishing memory reconsolidation pattern in one’s brain. The result is a boost in self-care and more nurturing social connections.
