For the past several weeks, we’ve been exploring the negative effects of living in a world full of pervasive chemicals. These detrimental compounds have been linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases and various symptoms.
Thankfully, we can empower ourselves with safe, natural interventions to help us combat these excessive exposures and mitigate their damaging effects. One of my favorites is essential oils.
In the last several video blogs, we’ve been discussing the four ways that essential oils can defend us from the harmful impact of these substances. These include through:
(1) Their biochemical properties
(2) Serving as safe cleaning substitutes and wellness-enhancing aromatics in our sanitizing products, personalized scent signatures, fragrances, and perfumes.
(3) Supporting detoxification and elimination pathways by acting as anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants, cellular signaling molecules, and metal chelators
(4) Assisting with emotional balance and purging negative emotions
In my latest video post, I focus in more detail on this fourth and final way essential oils enhance our resilience while living in a contaminated world. This is in relation to their ability to calm our mind-body and balance our nervous system.
How does this aid detoxification?
For healthy elimination and removal of substances, the body needs to be in a calm, parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. If one is chronically “wired” up, the bowels and liver can become stagnant. This prevents toxins from leaving the body and results in their re-absorption and more complications.
Essential oils are perhaps most well-known for their ability to induce relaxation and relieve stress, therefore, preventing a “back up” and re-circulation of detrimental compounds.
Check out my video blog to learn more about the five key ways essential oils can calm our brains to support healthy detoxification.
Topics include how essential oils:
- Regulate our hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to safeguard mood and hormonal balance from brain and reproductive-disrupting compounds
- Buffer stress at the level of perception, keeping the body and mind calm to aid rest, digestion, and optimal elimination
- Balance hormonal symptoms that can result from downstream effects of chemical exposures
- Modulate cortisol, the stress hormone
- Stimulate the vagus nerve to keep the body in a parasympathetic state
