If you are living in an environment that experiences the change of seasons, you have likely noticed that each one is associated with a shift in our perception and focus. For example, springtime signifies rebirth and fresh starts. This aligns with several ancient traditions that connect this time of year with renewal and the “shedding of layers.”
Chinese medicine links spring with the wood element. The liver, our organ of detoxification, is connected to this element. As a result, many integrative doctors advocate for cleansing during this time frame.
The liver has over 500 functions, but it is most well-known for metabolizing what is harmful from our environment and ridding our body of cellular debris. The other organs of elimination (the kidneys, lungs, skin, and intestines) further support the clearing out of toxins and waste.
Providing the body with holistic support for enhanced elimination, while avoiding additional accumulation of detrimental substances, has been shown to aid our overall wellness. This is because detrimental chemicals can harm our health and are ubiquitous in our environment.
Still, we must be cautious to how we approach “purifying the body,” because unintentional, dangerous consequences can result. These include the detriments of fueling eating disorders and body shaming.
As a naturopathic and functional medicine doctor, I do believe it is possible to support the elimination of toxins while safely satisfying our bodies with food that feels good and supports our biology, psychology, ethnic practices, and pleasure. This is through using personalized, intentional approaches to nutrition combined with integrative and holistic methods to aid the body, mind, spirit, and heart to function at their best.
One of the modalities that I use the most with my clients is essential oils. Besides supporting the emotional upheaval of diet culture messaging, these aromatic allies also protect and shield our body and mind from the harmful effects of toxins. In fact, essential oils are an effective way to mitigate the unwanted symptoms and physiological imbalances that are linked to excess chemical exposures.
In my latest video blog, I dive deeper into how essential oils support our ability to detoxify. Topics include:
- The four ways that essential oils naturally aid elimination and safeguard the body from noxious substances
- The many biochemical properties of essential oils that help to re-balance the body when exposed to toxins, prevent further harm, and enhance wellness
