Why February is Associated with Our Heart
We are in the month of February, which is often associated with the heart. This is for two good reasons, and they relate to our health.
The first is obvious, it’s Valentines Day. You may wonder, how does this holiday relate to heart health? February 14th has a rich cultural history. It has become a world-wide outreach to our loved ones to show appreciation for their nourishing connections. This focus on love is a form of medicine for the heart.
Specifically, healthy relationships are associated with better cardiac health. Most importantly, we also have evidence that the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease is perceived isolation. Furthermore, love as a feeling is a neurobiological process that impacts our emotions and overall physiology.
The second and “real” medical reason February is related to our circulatory organ is because it was federally designated “American Heart Month”. This was officially proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on December 30,1963 (via Proclamation 3566).
Unfortunately, even though our culture and health professionals have a monthly focus on our hearts every year, it hasn’t been improving America’s cardiovascular health outcomes. According to the CDC, cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States. This translates to heart disease killing one person every 33 seconds!
So, in honor of heart month, my recent video offers you some integrative resources to care for your beloved organ. It is evident we need a new, holistic approach, as our conventional one is not producing the desired results.
