Recently, many of my posts have been on the topic of improving mental health. This is for three main reasons:
- We are in the midst of a mental health crisis, and psychiatric diagnoses in our youth are rising in prevalence.
- The solutions to this acceleration of mental illnesses in our population have been shortsighted. They have solely been focused on improving access to interventions that aren’t addressing the root of the problem.
- Mental health stigma is still rampant and people believe that brain disorders are related to a lack of willpower or a personality trait. This is not accurate.
These three aspects are why I feel it is imperative to consider the underlying causes of brain imbalances and integrate more holistic treatment approaches.
One area of brain health that many struggle with is a lack of focus. This is for a variety of reasons. The most obvious is our fast-paced society.
In today’s world, there are so many things vying for our attention. Besides everyday stressors, we are faced with increased awareness of disturbing global events, endless social media notifications, countless texts and emails, and easily accessible technology. These factors make it difficult for our brains to weed out disruptions versus serious threats.
In my latest clinical tip, Why Can’t I Focus, I briefly review the many reasons why one may be having a hard time with staying on task. Specifically, I discuss eight main ways our attention gets hijacked. Then, I highlight how essential oils can help in addressing the underlying brain imbalances that result.
