When most people think of hormones, they likely think of the three main players: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Although it is true that these are first chairs regarding reproductive health, they are just part of a symphony of amazing players. Furthermore, besides fertility, they all have many other vital functions in both sexes.
There are hormone receptors located all throughout your body. This demonstrates their system-wide impact. For example, they exist in your blood vessels, kidneys, pancreas, heart, and your brain.
Many are all too aware of what happens when even one of these instruments are out of tune. This is because hormones control and coordinate many functions in the body. These include regulating our metabolism, reproduction, growth and development, responses to all forms of stressors, and mood.
As you can tell, hormones pack a lot of power within the minuscule amounts of them that circulate throughout our body. Due to the impact of these tiny chemicals, their production, transport, utilization, and removal from the body have many tight control mechanisms. (R, R) Hormones are also very specific and act as a key that opens the lock into the door of their exact target tissue.
Our hormones’ delicate milieu can be disturbed by various things. These include inflammation, blood sugar dysregulation, non-nourishing lifestyle practices, and, very commonly, stress. Due to the far-reaching effects of hormones, these factors can cause havoc and result in a variety of symptoms. Therefore, being mindful of keeping interruptions of our chemical messengers to a minimal can help us to avoid the mind-body chaos that can cause such misery.
In my latest article and video, I highlight how our hormones are the master conductors in our bodies. Then, I discuss how stress can wreak turmoil on our hormones, especially in robbing us of calming progesterone. Next, I defend the role of cortisol, the stress hormone, in our body and how we can support our stress levels to better sync our hormones.
