Prior to the past few years, the back-to-school jitters mostly resulted from the jolting shift away from the relaxing, laid-back days of summer and into a more structured routine. As the countdown to the classroom got closer, nervous anticipation grew. Children and parents alike contemplated the unknown possibilities of navigating the demands of new environment, adjusting to a changed schedule, peer group pressures, and academic expectations.
Now, because of the world events, the increased challenges on both children and adults’ minds are way more intense then what was already concerning in the past. These include the added pressures of:
- Dealing with the results from previous years’ gaps in learning
- Staff shortages
- Inflation
- School security
- Acclimating to changing safety protocols
- Addressing “hot topic” issues
- Lapses in social-emotional development
- The rise in mental health issues in our children
Unfortunately, this list is not inclusive of all the worries parents and teachers face heading into the 2022 school year.
All these burdens can seem almost too much to bear. Sadly, we lack the resources for mental health we need in traditional care to effectively cope.
In this video and accompanying article, my goal is to help to start to fill this gap.
Topics include:
- the extreme burdens that the 2022 school year bring
- the brain and emotional consequences of unrelenting stress
- what we can do to effectively cope
- a peek into my naturopathic toolkit for helping kids and parents handle these trying times

In an upcoming article, I will continue to provide you with tools from conventional mental health experts and from my own and others’ integrative mind-body perspectives. Subjects will deal with both the current mental health environment and handling typical back-to-school brain health issues.
