What if striving to be healthy was actually making you sick?
If you are:
- living with the belief that you have to eat perfectly, or close to perfect, to avoid disease and/or
- operating within a wellness and diet culture mindset
… you may be doing more harm than good to your mental and physical health.
Recently, I discussed how diet culture has etched its way into society and medicine and the damage it is doing.
Now, in my follow up article, I take it one step further. I describe how, in an effort to “combat obesity,” many nutritional, medical, and fitness experts have unknowingly contributed to the harms of diet culture.
These detrimental viewpoints and belief systems all have taken root into “health and wellness.” This makes wellness and diet culture the same, or at least indistinguishable.
In my latest article and video, I discuss this topic in detail, including:
- How wellness and diet culture have confused fat for the enemy and taken many people as prisoners through body shaming and resulting lowered self-esteem
- Holistic wellness and the dangers of perfectionism in health practices
- The psychological and mental harms that can occur within wellness culture
- Why advocating for health at all sizes may provide a solution to the problems within wellness culture
With all the media and health messages we are fed on a daily basis, it’s hard to decipher the line between implementing diet and lifestyle practices for enhanced living and turning them into obsessive practices that lead to dissatisfaction and restriction.
Now, more than ever, we need to realize that health itself does not have to be the end goal, but it can be used as a means to live a happier, more vibrant life.

There is no quality control in the United States, and oils labeled as “100% pure” need only to contain 5% of the actual oil. The rest of the bottle can be filled with fillers and sometimes toxic ingredients that can irritate the skin. The studies are not based solely on a specific brand of an essential oil, unless stated.
