Mind-Body-Heart Health
The holistic approach to medicine and the interconnectedness between the mind and body are becoming better recognized and accepted into mainstream medicine.
The narrow viewpoint that health is simply the absence of symptoms, or a disease state, is also being replaced with a new philosophy. This is one in which health and wellness are comprehensive and dynamic concepts. They are inclusive of the body, mind, spirit, lifestyle, genetics, environment, and socioeconomics.
Although diet, lifestyle, and movement are often the focus of integrative health, and are very important factors to maintaining wellness, they are not enough to obtain a truly balanced, healthy life. More attention needs to be given to community, mindset, and honoring one’s connection to one’s beliefs and values. In fact, these latter aspects may be even more important in determining health outcomes.
This is why I’ve been so adamant about discussing the importance of a truly integrative healthcare philosophy that considers the interaction between the mind, body, spirituality, lifestyle, and relationships.
In my recent post, I discussed how the vital connection between the heart and brain is another example of the need to focus more on holistic methods in healthcare.
Cardiovascular disease continues to be the number one cause of death in America. I believe this is because the conventional medical approach is not emphasizing the important role of social connections and mental health on the heart.
Caring for our emotional, mental, and social health are key factors to living a heart-healthier life.
This are areas where naturopathic medicine shines in addressing.
