How is your spiritual health?
Would that question startle you if it came from the mouth of your physician?
As a naturopathic doctor, I always inquire about my clients’ spiritual and religious health. I was taught that this information is vital to assessing their beliefs which can influence treatments and wellness outcomes.
Unfortunately, the connection between the mind, body, and spirit took a backstage to mechanistic and biological treatments in modern, conventional medicine. Yet, in more recent times, it has reemerged in popularity and is slowly being incorporated into mainstream.
In my latest article, I discuss how religion and spirituality could be the missing pieces in medicine. I believe they are required to attain a truly holistic, healing healthcare system.
1. The disconnect of health, religion, and spirituality
2. The importance of the mind-body-soul connection
3. Eight reasons why religion and spirituality belong in medicine
4. The power of mindset and belief on health outcomes
Whereas both physicians and patients can be hesitant to discuss how spirituality and religious practices impact therapeutic responses, they are important influences that should not be ignored.
After reading this post, it is my hope that you will start to ponder discussing your religious and spiritual practices at your next doctor visit.
