The impact of trauma can bring about various responses. They can range from resiliency to posttraumatic growth (PTG), or to posttraumatic depreciation (PTD).
Those with PTD are not fortunate enough to be able come out of trauma better off than prior to the event (PTG), or even able to bounce back to their set point (resilient). Some, especially those with mental illness diagnoses, can end up suffering more and note a decline in their functioning.
Yet, it has been found in research that most people experience both PTD and PTG simultaneously in different contexts of their life. They are different psychological processes that reflect various domains in life. For example, one may feel closer to certain social connections in one area of their life yet struggle with finances.
The intricacy of human beings and their desire to move forward and through trying times is refreshing, hopeful, and relatable. As we venture out into the world around us, resiliency and gaining perspective could be on the uptick for many, even though PTD is still co-occurring.
- I discuss how people are responding and adjusting to the world almost two years post the first world-wide shut-down.
- I also highlight how a combination of integrative and traditional mental support may help fuel hope, compassion, and acceptance to help us move forward with more cohesion and tolerance.
I hope this article will offer you a new perspective to be kind to yourself as you challenge your brain to look for the diamonds in the rough.
I also hope it will allow you to embrace and accept, with less judgement, that PTD is not something to be ashamed of.
It is a response that can be a signal to seek out additional support or treatment.
