Is attaining health as simple as managing disease?
Are your emotions and moods just a neurochemical imbalance?
If you believe that health is more than just the absence of symptoms… then there’s more to the story.
Last week, I explained that the American medical system is costing lots of money with a return of investment that is nil. Along with the highest price tag among the developed countries, the U.S. also earns its place as the nation with the lowest life expectancy, highest rates of chronic diseases, and the most hospitalizations that could have been prevented.
I challenged you to consider another way, a transformative medical paradigm held by naturopathic doctors and functional medicine providers who seek to prevent illness, promote health, and empower the patient. This is a much different paradigm than disease-management and sick care. Although both are needed, the balance has leaned too long on symptom suppression, pain management, and the sole use of pharmaceutical options over lifestyle and more natural products.
Unfortunately, this same conventional viewpoint on “fixing” the body, vs. encouraging it to heal and nurturing it back to wellness, is held for psychiatry. The mental health struggles of Americans are reaching epic levels with one in five diagnosed with a mental illness, even prior to the recent traumatic incidents, and the numbers have been significantly rising since. The sad part is, there hasn’t been effective and accessible solutions available for many sufferers.
I uphold the belief that you cannot treat the physical without addressing the emotional and vice versa. The body and brain both respond to psychological stimuli, physiological impacts, and biochemical effects. This is why naturopathic medicine is desperately needed to be integrated into holistic whole-person, mind-body health and wellness care.
I discuss this more on my latest post as I explore previous articles on similar themes including:
