We are in the midst of a societal crisis where many people are not receiving the proper treatment for their psychiatric disorders. The misunderstanding of our culture regarding the differences between stress, emotional disturbances, and true psychological diagnoses continues to perpetuate this “sick cycle.” Many sufferers stay silent as a result. Rather than reaching out for the support they deserve to address a true physiological and anatomical brain disorder; these people have succumbed to living lives of quiet desperation.
Horrifyingly, others have been victims of uneducated and unintentionally harmful advice. These well-meaning “experts” and self-help gurus have techniques that may be appropriate for goal setting or stress busting, but not for solving a true biochemical imbalance. If one “fails” to succeed in these programs, demoralization with major ramifications can result. In fact, several studies have suggested that one’s self-perception of “needing help” and lack of social support has been associated with more severity of symptoms. (source, source, source)
The implications of untreated psychiatric imbalances on financial, relational, emotional, and physical wellness makes it virtually impossible for thriving and reaching one’s full potential. Furthermore, this negative impact is deepened by those who blame themselves for what they perceive as a character defect.
This week, I continue on my mission to end the stigma associated with “mental health” by providing you with more tools and proper education on this very tender topic.
