You bet! I thought this topic worth a brief dialog after a recent customer appeared surprised when I mentioned the importance of maintaining the perimeter lawn areas surrounding the newly installed garden. It never occurred to me that folks thought of them as separate entities.

For starters, lack of frequent mowing of areas that surround your perennial gardens gives off a terrible visual. You may have some of the best blooms in town, but the eye is directed to the 6 inch high turf and weeds that are often in the forefront of your carefully designed and tended gardens. So if nothing else, consider the visual impact.

Second, when you allow your perimeter turf areas to grow high, the turf and weeds go to seed. Earlier in the season dandelions were were problematic, at present we are battling the broad leaf brought on by the seasonal conditions. If left untended, those seeds end up in your nicely mulched, well feed and watered gardens that of course…will give you bumper crops of weeds throughout your bedding areas. Garden beds are perfect reseed areas as the plant material provides nice little protected spaces to trap the seeds and the conditions to flourish. The broad leaf especially will grow even quicker than if does in the turf areas.

And finally, keeping your turf -bed edges well trimmed and cut is critical. Broad leaf especially grows like an invasive ground cover with a substantial horizontal spread. Your garden bed edges will look ragged and the weeds will invade like octopus tentacles.

Overall weeds are bred for survival. They multiply quickly in our current weather patterns, and can take over a garden area in no time flat. So be sure to keep your lawns routinely mowed, Get out those string trimmers and be sure to the manicure those corners and edges the mower can’t get into. Pull out the migrating weeds by hand before they overtake your bed edge. These practices will help you keep your gardens beautifully “sustainable”.
