One of my most treasured childhood traditions during this season of celebration was watching the beloved Charles Shultz, A Charlie Brown Christmas on television. The story and life themes within that program always set me in the right mood for the season. As a parent I also sat and watched that program each December with my children.
Three years ago as part of my “KIds Go Green” initiatives, I developed a hands-on program for kids that combined my admiration for the Charlie Brown Christmas story with my passion for encouraging kids to “get their hands active and dirty” with gardening. The program encourages a bit of nature in care for live plants, creating with ones hands and literature focused on a child’s true “spirit” of Christmas within a family centered event. Thus became my workshop: A Charlie Brown Christmas Tree. This is my third season offering this unique local program.
I combine the essence of family interaction with music, reading the beloved story, drawing, decorating their own “Charlie Brown Tree” while sipping on homemade hot chocolate….all in a green house setting. A live tiny tree with care at home instructions for the family along with their very own storybook encourage the children to relive their workshop time, get into the Christmas spirit and enjoy the richness of the celebration. Satisfaction and pride are elements of reward as the child takes their package home to share with their family. The live tree may even spark some new gardeners along the way!
So join me in welcoming the spirit of the season with “A Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Workshop” Saturday, December 10th, 1:00PM at Dehns Flowers and Greenhouse Beekman Street Saratoga Springs. Workshop cost is $25.00/child. The program is recommend for children 4-10 years old. Registration is limited…so call Dehns @ 584-1880
As always…keeping common sense and sustainability firmly rooted in all my practices!
