Professor Matthew Hockenos of Skidmore College will describe the historical events that began in 1933 and led to Kristallnacht. Recalling these events helps us to acknowledge what can happen when antisemitism and hate in any form are allowed to intensify. It also reminds us why Holocaust education is necessary. Professor Matthew Hockenos teaches modern European history at Skidmore College. He is Harriet Johnson Toadvine ’56 Professor in Twentieth-Century History and a member of the Committee on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He is the author of Then They Came for Me: Martin Niemöller, the Pastor Who Defied the Nazis (Basic Books, 2018).
