About this event
Violinist Philip Kates is joined by his colleagues from The Philadelphia Orchestra and pianist Michael Clement for a program of chamber masterworks from the Gilded Age, including music by Amy Beach and Antonin Dvorak.
Piano Quintet in f-sharp minor, Op. 67 by Amy Beach, premiered in 1909, was a milestone in American chamber literature, an exquisite work - by turns dramatic and virtuosic with lush passages of quiet beauty.
Dvorak’s String Quartet No.12, Op.96, known as his “American” Quartet, was written in 1893 during a summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa during the composer’s residence as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. A true masterpiece of America’s Gilded Age, DvoĆák set out to capture the spirit of American music in the vibrant quartet’s melodic flow and rich harmonies.
A lakeside reception will follow.
