In my previous post I discussed the limitless places to search for a job. Now I will converse about how to find the right job for you.
The first step is to know what type of job you are looking for. In my company, when I ask this question, I sometimes hear ANYTHING. I understand that in these times anything maybe an answer of desperation, but it does not help in a job search. Break down what type of field you may want to be in, such as Finance, Medical, or Construction. Then determine what type of job you would like in that field such as Bank Teller, Medical Biller, or Foreman and so on. When you decide the type of work you are interested in, then make sure you have the skill set that fits that field of work. If you don’t have the skill set, then you should look into ways of getting it, such as school or classes specific to that field. Now that you have a good idea of what type of work you are looking for you can find it.
There is a notion called the Circle of Influence. What this means is that in your job search you have a Circle of Influence. Those closest to you (i.e. Family and Friends) would be the closest in your circle. Those friends and family have contacts in the workforce and that extends your circle. Then those contacts have contacts and that extends your circle even further and so on.
Now that you know what type of work you are looking for, it’s time to build a game plan and put that plan in motion.
1. Speak to your friends and family and discuss exactly what type of work you are looking for. Ask them if they know anyone who can help in that field. Continue to branch out and contact any people you have been referred to.
2. Scour the resources I mentioned in my previous blog entry. Use the internet, newspapers and free press. Remember that companies don’t post open jobs all at one time, so you will need to continue checking in.
3. Make sure your resume is up to date and ready to be distributed to any person or company requesting it.
This is a basic game plan to finding a job. Sometimes this process moves quickly, sometimes it takes more time. Be optimistic, persistent, determined and it will happen.
Till next time, Good Luck!
