My first house was mint green. Yes, bright mint green. The house was built in the 1940s and was, at some point prior to us purchasing it, re-sided. Apparently mint green siding was either very popular at the time or more likely, on sale. The house had black shutters and a plain white door. You might be thinking that with a mint green house, I wasn’t in need of more color, but for me the plain white door was just plain drab.

I had to do something about it.

My challenge became, what could possibly go with mint green? I walked aisle after aisle of paint sections searching for something to jump out at me. Then, one morning as I put on my coat and picked up my bag, it hit me. Standing in my kitchen, I noticed my favorite green bag against my purple winter coat, I always received compliments on the bag and the coat together. My search was over, I had my color, purple!

Now, purple is tricky. I couldn’t go light purple; I didn’t want my house to look like a candy shop after all. So I opted for a dark purple, Blackberry in fact, like the one featured here from about.com.

Without telling a soul, I bought the paint and when my husband was out for the day, I painted front door Blackberry. Let me tell you, it looked fantastic.

Neighbors would walk by and remark at what a beautiful color it was, how it fit so well with the color of the house, etc. I was so pleased I found myself wishing I had more doors to paint.

With that said, you only have one front door, one chance to make a statement, so go ahead, paint it! Paint it a color no one would think to paint it. For me, long gone are the days of red, black or white doors. Give your front a face lift. Bring some new life to it. Who says you have to keep your door the color it is now? You can always change it back to red or black, more importantly you can change it to any color that suits your changing tastes. I have nothing against red, but try burgundy, cranberry, redwood or one of my favorites Pomegranate by Benjamin Moore. Valspar has a line of paints from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. These colors are not only gorgeous but a portion of the proceeds go to support efforts to help protect historic places such as the Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY. This line of colors also helps those of you with older homes preserve their historic charm. I can just picture your front door in Lyndhurst Celestial Blue! Gorgeous!

If your house is a classic white with black shutters, you have the perfect set up for greatness! Pick a color like the one featured below from Southern Living.

Mark my word, people will drive by your house and take notice.

Maybe a bright blue is a bit too bold for you, that doesn’t mean you’re not fun or willing to go bold, instead choose a Navy blue or a deeper blue like Benjamin Moore Evening Sky seen here from House Beautiful.

This Navy door surrounded by beautiful crown molding is the picture of class. Blue has a calming and inviting feel to it. This door welcomes in your guests.

Looking for a bit more color? There is always green or orange.

Painting a front door can be done in half a day at most. Just take your time doing it; a poorly painted door doesn’t look so hot up close. Keep your trim paint handy as well when doing it, that way any mistakes you can touch up as you go and it won’t drag out the project.

Drive around your neighborhood, look at the colors around you, look at the other houses. Get ideas, see what other colors are on their doors and make yours stand out. In developments where many of the houses, styles and colors all seem to blend, a colorful front door instantly makes your home stand out. Pick a color that you love and don’t be afraid to go for it! Soon you’ll find yourself saying “My house is the white one with the killer blue door, you’ll know it when you see it!”

Until next time, happy decorating!
