White is defined as the absence of color. Ha, I think not. Somewhere along the line we all got it stuck in our heads that anything white meant boring, lacking creativity or worst of all, blah. Blah, even saying the word makes me cringe.
When I recently moved into my new home, the master bedroom was painted dark teal. My real estate agent remarked at the color. He said how different and bold it was, insinuating that we wouldn’t have to paint it. I politely disagreed. I had much different plans for this bedroom, but my plans generated some quizzical looks. I always proceed with a bit of caution when telling people (my husband) of my master plans, or in this case my master bedroom plans. I wasn’t sure how he’d take this one, so I waited until we were just about ready to move in.
I told him my plan was to paint our entire bedroom white. We have cathedral ceilings so the task of painting the whole room would not be easy. Add to the fact we would have to paint over dark teal and I knew this would require some convincing and hard work.
Not surprisingly there are tons and tons of shades of white. Tinted with all different colors, blue, gray, pink, yellow, etc. You would think picking out white would be easy but in reality it takes as much time as picking out any other color. After much deliberation and what seemed like an hour of holding up shade after shade saying “what about this white, nope too gray.” or “what about this white, does it look too blue?” We finally settled on a version of plain white, Pure White in fact, by Sherwin Williams. This choice allowed me to go in any direction I wanted. I could choose any color or colors to coordinate in my room.
After priming the room with some extra helping hands, (I’m thankful my mother-in-law’s idea of family bonding is to help paint), we moved on to the white paint. To be honest, when you start to paint over any colored wall with white paint there is definitely a moment when you pause and question what you are doing. And I did. I appreciated my husband and mother-in-law not questioning my choice otherwise I would have really panicked. “Will my white room be too boring?” I thought to myself as I applied coat after coat of white paint.
Let me tell you, I have no regrets. When I walk into my bedroom I truly feel like I’m somewhere else. The feeling I get is that of floating on a crisp white cloud. My room seems so clean and relaxing, so bright and tranquil. I truly love it. When I open the windows and the curtains billow, I could be just about anywhere and it makes me so happy.
When you are searching for that perfect color to paint your room or you want to spend money on a beautiful quilt why not choose white. You won’t be sorry. What is there not to like about white? White is easy to work with and goes with every color possible. Add a splash of color here or there and you will have a room you won’t regret, I promise.
Until next time, Happy Designing!
