Green is defined as “a color intermediate in the spectrum between yellow and blue, found in nature as the color of most grasses and leaves while growing, of some fruits while ripening, and of the sea”. So, ready to Go Green?
Green to me, is a color that is full of life. It represents all of the wonderful seasons we encounter here year round. It is a prominent color during Christmas and the holidays. We
often decorate our houses with dark evergreens during this time.We can even smell green during the holidays…. you know that smell?!
Then, as the snow begins to melt we come out of our hibernation. We start to get a glimpse of green grass or daffodils sprouting and it reminds us that winter is ending and soon it will be spring! For many of us this can be energizing. In the spring, on Saint Patrick’s Day we celebrate green; green beer, green rivers (Chicago), green shirts, pins, hats, etc.
Green is a beautiful, striking color and when used inside your home it can change the entire look of your room.
Choosing the right color green can be tricky. Kermit the Frog said it best when he said “It’s not easy, being green” So before diving right in and buying a green pillow, bed spread or lamp you really have to be comfortable with that shade of green and feel confident that you will be able to work around it. My taste tends to steer me away from the light sage greens. I think they can looked washed out and uninspiring. I like deeper greens, something a touch lighter than a kelly or hunter green, almost a creamy green, if you will. I find this color easier to work with and not as difficult to pair with other colors.
Note the color of the blanket on the bed and the rug below. This color is not too bright or overpowering and can be paired with many other colors like country blue, turquoise, light green, or pink, etc. The color is easy to work with.
Another shade of green that is making its way into our homes is Avocado green. When done correctly avocado green can make a pleasant yet bold statement.
If you are willing to go avocado green
I might suggest using bolder colors such as orange,
eggplant, or red. Orange is pairs nicely with this shade of green.
However, orange is not for everyone. When I look at these pictures I
try and take out the orange and substitute it with purple for a bit of a
different feel. Set this bold green against anything white; white trim, white bed coverings or even a white sofa or chair and it will really make your room pop.
Perfect example, the white bed spread really draws your eye towards the details, the
patterns in the pillows and the head board. It also allows you to drink
in the lush green color on the walls. Minimal decorations permits the
green color to take center stage.
I am green with envy.
Green is an underutilized color. Yet because it has a place, regardless of the season, this can help our wallets when decorating. It moves easily from season to
season. It is a calming color. It stands out yet is quite happy to just be the green blanket on your bed. Green makes people happy. No, really. Green has actually been proven to help people feel less depressed.
I leave you with this; according to Squidoo.com “Green is the pervasive color in the natural world that is an ideal backdrop in interior design because we are so used to seeing it everywhere” Makes perfect sense to me.
So go forth and go green.
Until next time, Happy Designing!
