Savory Pantry Has Your Comforting Foods, Flavors and Gift Ideas
SARATOGA SPRINGS – For a foodie, it can be strongly opined that this autumn is the most wonderful time of the year. The cooler weather of harvest time brings about a wealth of flavors that revive our taste sensors, and ushers in the time of year that home and hearth regain prominence. Maple is rediscovered, the crispness of tart apples and pumpkins enrich our palettes – and what’s more comforting than soup on a cool day?
From end to end, the shelves at Savory Pantry (486 Broadway) are stocked with the flavors of Fall.
I stopped in recently to do some shopping, and was delighted to find both Keeley and Sharon in the house. This excursion was ostensibly for gifts – but, you know that I picked a few items to bring back to Planet Arthur as well. Here’s a few that came home with me:
Lambrecht Gourmet’s Sweet + Spicy Glazed Pecans Gift Tin
Keeley mentioned that she thought these pecans were a perfect hostess gift. All I can say is that the hostess had better hurry, or she’ll be shut out of these delicious nuggets. From Heber Springs, Arkansas, selected plump pecans are roasted, then dusted with a sprinkling of sugar and a blend of four different chile peppers. Not too hot, but just enough spice to keep you interested.
Whether brought to an elegant soiree’ or given to the host of a poker/football bash – you’ll be guaranteed to generate smiles. I guess what makes it a great hostess gift is that there is rarely any clean-up here – more often than not, they’re all gone! Well, at least the hostess gets to keep the tin!

Potlicker Kitchen
I like 2 from these Vermont Jam Masters:
– The Pumpkin Ale is a fall seasonal made with unfiltered pumpkin ale. It is great to glaze an apple tart, baked chicken or carrots, and also can be served with cheeses or a PB+J.
– Also, their Maple Stout is deep and malty, with notes of maple + coffee. It is made with 14th Star Brewing Craft Beer. Great on toast or as a spread for sandwiches, this rich roasty can be used to caramelize onions deliciously, or used as an accompaniment to pot roast.

Crown Maple Bourbon Barrel Aged Organic Maple Syrup
If there is one flavor that universally says fall, it is probably Maple. When you combine it with Bourbon barrel aging as these Dutchess County purveyors do – the taste impact expands exponentially!
The sap for Crown Maple syrup comes from tens of thousands of century-old sugar and red maple trees on sustainably managed farmland in the Hudson River Valley. Each syrup is painstakingly crafted to deliver unique taste profiles that enhance any recipe – from Saturday morning pancakes to Saturday evening cocktails to complex haute cuisine. This latest offering from Crown Maple features an exquisite combination of pure maple syrup aged in re-purposed Bourbon barrels, resulting in an artisan quality syrup with rich, robust flavor.

Hearty Soups + More Gift Box
When the weather turns cooler, give a gift of comforting deliciousness! (Hint: You can give one to yourself, too!)
This abundant gift box is anchored by an assortment of healthy soup mixes and crock pot seasonings from Mary Song, upstate New York’s answer to “what’s for dinner”? Mary’s Healthy Gourmet Kitchen soups feature gorgeous colors and layers of flavor you’ll soon be enjoying. The ingredients are free of gluten, have no added MSG, salt, or sugar, and are Non-GMO and vegan.
Included in this Savory Pantry gift basket are one each of 5 Bean Chili, Garden Veggie and Split Pea soup mixes – their best sellers. You’ll also find the ever-popular Chicken Cacciatore Crock Pot Seasoning. To accompany the soups, Savory Pantry has chosen a generous tin of Potter’s Classic White Oyster Crackers. They are great on soups and salads and in snack mixes and are equally yummy straight from the can! You’ll also find a box of classic Cheddar Cheese Straws — a Southern delicacy for generations, crafted from aged cheddar cheese and pure butter with a hint of paprika and cayenne. A bag of Saratoga crackers completes this heart-warming assortment.

American Spoon Pumpkin Seed Salsa
Of those who dispute my contention about maple being the quintessential fall flavor, most will undoubtedly wax poetic about pumpkin. Personally, I think we generally over-pumpkin do it. I prefer it as an ingredient in a well-blended mix, rather than as a dominant flavor. To each his own, but this salsa from Petoskey, Michigan does it for me!
A must have for fall entertaining, this beautifully balanced handmade salsa features tiny chunks of toasted pumpkin seeds and flecks of Chile de Arbol swimming in a blend of fresh tomatoes and red bell peppers. The medium intensity makes this a favorite for snacking straight from the jar and versatile enough to complement a variety of dishes, Nachos, tacos and egg dishes all get a lift when paired with this award-winner.
