Annual Jockey / Horseman Hardwood Showdown Benefits Race Track Chaplaincy
SARATOGA SPRINGS – A Charity Basketball Game that is organized by the New York division of the Race Track Chaplaincy of America had a new wrinkle when the jockeys and horsemen faced each other in the 2018 edition of the game, which took place on Thursday, August 2, at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center at 15 Vanderbilt Avenue.
For the first time, fans had the opportunity to make pledges and donations in the name of individual players on both rosters, and the starting five on each team were those players who have attracted the most sponsorship. The pledges raised will be donated to the Puerto Rican Thoroughbred industry.
The event started approximately 10 years ago and routinely draws upward of 300 fans. The jockey’s team, coached each year by Hall of Fame Jockey Angel Cordero Jr., had a special appearance by former NBA All-Star and New York Knicks great Bernard King. Trainers Todd Pletcher and Kiaran McLaughlin coach the horsemen’s team. Mitch Levites of the NYRA television department did his usual outstanding job as your play-by-play announcer.
