SARATOGA SPRINGS – Collective jaws were dropping; with smiles and laughter all around for a great cause, as the Saratoga jockey colony showed again why they are not quitting their day jobs in a display of good-natured, mostly off-key performances at the Annual Jockey Karaoke event to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund (PDJF).
Leona and John Velazquez took home the “People’s Choice” award for their rendition of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.”
The Judges’ Award went to Mike Luzzi and Phil Teator for their performance of Kiss’s “I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night (And Party Every Day).”
Monday night’s event was Emceed by Tom Durkin. The judges were the Honorables D. Wayne Lukas, Elliot Walden, Todd Pletcher, Lisa Troutt and Bob Edwards.
But, as always, the biggest winners of the night were racing fans, who cheered on their heroes – who once again demonstrated that being out of character – builds character. Kudos to everyone.
