SARATOGA SPRINGS – iTheatre Saratoga is the resident professional theatre company at the National Museum of Dance (99 S. Broadway). They are entering our 7th season (it was formerly known as Creative Place International) which will include their summer youth theatre workshop and productions of Night of the Living Dead and Agatha Christie’s The Stranger later in the year.
Will Severin, President of iTheatre Saratoga, explained some details about the summer youth workshop:
“Last season, iTheatre/CPI debuted a new production workshop at the National Museum of Dance for young people in which participants deconstructed old French Canadian fairy tales and gave them a unique 21st century spin. The Golden Phoenix proved to be a hit with audiences and our young performers. We will be reprising our youth program this June/July, open to students 9-14, with a nominal enrollment fee and scholarships available. This year’s youth workshop project is Inst-Adventure: Metropolis, a high-tech choose-your-own-adventure based on the classic sci-fi film.
“We are looking to begin an international exchange with Swedish theatre artists using a similar model to a program they have successfully implemented, a “techformance.” Essentially smart-devices allow audiences to choose the direction our play takes, a modern take on a choose-your-own-adventure.
“We’ll be exploring a variety of social issues, pushing the boundaries of theatre, and as usual looking to incorporate the insights of our young collaborators, all in the style of the silent-era film Metropolis.”
This year’s workshop will run for two weeks culminating in a handful of performances at the end of week two. Week one will be focused on the creation of the work and week two will be performance-based, there are opportunities to join for both weeks or one week.
