Father/Son Authors to Discuss Books at Racing Museum Monday
SARATOGA SPRINGS – The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame (191 Union Avenue) will have a special event on Monday evening, August 14 at 7 pm. The Museum will host a discussion and book signing by Greg Veitch and his father Michael. They will be discussing their recent books about Saratoga Springs crime, and Saratoga Horse racing.
Both are in a position to know. Greg Veitch is a fifth generation Saratogian. A lifelong resident, he currently serves as the Chief of Police for the Saratoga Springs Police Department. His father Michael has been the preeminent Thoroughbred racing writer for The Saratogaian newspaper for decades.
Greg Veitch’s book: All the Law in the World Won’t Stop Them is the story of the darker side of Saratoga Springs. For over one hundred years Saratoga Springs experienced a battle between the forces of law and order and the forces of vice, crime and corruption. The Saratoga Springs of yesteryear would hardly be recognizable today. Gambling, violence, crime and the most blatant forms of corruption allowed gamblers and gangsters to take over the town and run virtually untouched by the law. Local criminals and national organized crime figures ran the town, often with the support of the local citizenry. These are their stories. Stories of crime, gambling and corruption in Saratoga Springs through from the 1820s through 1921, and they are all true.
Michael Veitch will be discussing two of his recently authored books: “Foundations of Fame” and “Summit of Champions”. The first book covers the beginnings of Horse Racing in Saratoga Springs in the 1860s through the end of the nineteenth century; the second picks up from there and continues through 1955.
The event itself is free and open to the public. Copies of both authors’ books will be available for purchase and signing.
