‘Hats Off to Jake’ at Mary Martin
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Once upon a time, in a land of enchantment…
I came upon Tuesday, July 11 prepared for anything. Pulling double-duty coverage of two incredibly creative fundraisers in support of Jake’s Help From Heaven (JHFH) and their event next Wednesday, July 19 at Vapor.
A virtual sea of chapeaus appeared before me at Mary Martin’s new (second) location – a Day Spa at 2 Franklin Square.
I was greeted joyously by Natalie Sillery – a long-time JHFH supporter, a dear friend and colleague. Natalie and Mary had arranged the decor, along with help from their many supportive friends and guests. A splendid Tuesday afternoon oasis, with wine, cheese, crackers, and Prosecco. Just heavenly.
I was delighted to meet “Mona the Mad Hatter” (L) from Philadelphia and Basia, a terrific clothing designer from Woodstock. Natalie never lacks from interesting company!
In addition to hats galore, Natalie had brought some authentic Kentucky horseshoes – “With real Kentucky dirt!” she offered. Then they were “Natalized” – bejeweled and offered at $20 – her gift to Jake’s – they receive all of the cash, you get to keep the good luck contained therein…
Whilst lovely ladies were being made more lovely as they were adorning themselves with just the perfect hat for their 2017 summer fun, I came upon royalty. That would be my friend Sir Rick – yes, recently Knighted in France! Sir Rick seemed to be as pleased as I was to navigate the sea of beautiful estrogen that floated around us in Mary Martin’s various spa rooms…
The event was a smash – raising $1200! I could have hung with Sir Rick and the ladies… well, forever. And yet, a much more serious mission awaited me. I had been assigned to ‘battle the blues’ on the other side of town.
Like Helen of Troy, or Princess Laia – I took my inspiration from Natalie, Mary and the other lovely ladies, and went to join what could be an epic battle. I had prepared for a mission of highest importance, in which all my skills and wits would be tested. And I hoped I was ready.
