World Renowned Polish American String Band to Perform at the Harness Track at Saratoga Casino During Live Racing in Celebration of Flag Day
SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Polish American String Band, a Mummer group from Philadelphia, PA, will be performing at the Harness Track at the Saratoga Casino during live harness racing this Saturday night. Admission is free and guests are invited to enjoy drink specials, ice cream, fried dough and more throughout the evening on the track apron.
Formed in 1933, the band quickly became one of the finest musical and entertainment organizations out of Philadelphia, winning countless awards for their intricate performances. They became the first Mummer’s String Band to play at the prestigious Philadelphia Academy of Music in 1976 and performed for Pope John Paul II during the Pope’s visit to the United States in 1979.
And what exactly is a mummer, you say? According to dictionary.com mummers are defined as ” a person who wears a mask or fantastic costume while merrymaking or taking part in a pantomime, especially at Christmas and other festive seasons.”
Of course, it’s easier to show you. Here is the same band you can see on Saturday, performing recently on their home turf in Philadelphia:
The performance is sponsored by the Saratoga Casino and Hotel and the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association (SHHA).
Expect a festive atmosphere. The Mummers wouldn’t have it any other way.
