The Red Trouser Show
SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Orchard Project announced its first ever BUSK!, a free public event to kick off a Saratoga Springs summer, featuring artists from its famed residencies and beloved local acts. Taking place on Sunday June 4th, 2017 from Noon-6 pm in and around the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, BUSK! is a spontaneous, outrageous, family-friendly event that aims to offer something to everyone — from local bands and magicians to spectacular circus artists and stunt performers. The Orchard Project is extending its core mission of supporting new voices and new work by incorporating different genres of street performance to create a space for experimentation and exploration. From family-friendly performances to installations, the format allows for a diverse array of artistry under one banner. BUSK! will culminate in an evening cabaret at Putnam Den featuring artists who performed throughout the day, kicking off at 8:00pm.
Visiting performers include Atlas Circus Theatre (circus productions), LubDub Theater Co. (a hybrid physical theatre company), The Red Trouser Show (acrobats, comedians, and jugglers), and Howard Fishman (critically-acclaimed singer, guitarist, and composer). Local participants include Balloon Gal Jenny, traveling puppetry by Heldeberg Marionettes, face painting by Jojo’s Fabulous Faces, as well as musicians Jimy Graham, Katie Louise, Mike Campese, Nightmare River Band, Ramblin’ Jug Stompers, Shane Guerrette, and A World For You.
Normally found on street corners, BUSK! will elevate the form of “busking” by creating designated performance spaces and stages. Street performing is one of the most honest forms of entertainment – it allows you to watch a show, and then decide how much to pay for all that laughter and amazement. Each performer collects their own remunerations by passing a hat after their performance, which goes directly to that performer or act.
“We are overjoyed to be working with the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau and Saratoga Performing Arts Center as we launch this new annual event as part of the Orchard Project’s summer season in Saratoga Springs,” says Orchard Project Artistic Director, Ari Edelson. “The Heritage Visitor Center provides the ideal space for this new event, allows us to incorporate local food vendors, and offers green, grassy seating from which our audiences can relax and enjoy an eclectic mix of local and world class performers. By elevating this classic and eclectic form, we can’t wait to use the talents of buskers from near and far to launch a great summer in Saratoga.”
